I’m used to painting on location, so I try not to carry any more gear than I need. I usually bring three brushes: something big, medium, and small – scaled to whatever size I’m working.
For my test of Princeton’s Neptune synthetic squirrel brushes, I picked out a 1” oval wash, a size 9 quill, and a 3/8” sword liner.
I’ve used swords before – especially for twiggy tree branches. But I normally prefer a size 7 pointed round Artist’s Watercolour Sable from Winsor & Newton, which is almost a rigger in length, and can be either expressive or precise.
