OBSTACLE COURSE racing has seen explosive growth since 2010. Participation has soared by an estimated 4,000 percent since 2009, and race organizers have made millions on the events. But success doesn’t mean the industry is one big group hug. “There’s a lot of infighting,” says Adrian Bijanada, the 35-year-old owner of apparel company OCR Gear. Tough Mudder’s Will Dean and Spartan Race’s Joseph De Sena are notorious rivals, and directors of races large and small have resisted collaborating with each other, giving Bijanada something to think about. “I took a step back and asked, What does the sport really need?” he says. IN 1879, MORE THAN a century before ultra-endurance races became a thing, Arctic explorer Frederick Schwatka and 12 Inuit companions embarked on a record-setting 3,200-mile sled journey across the frozen tundra. To fuel themselves during the next 11 months, the men killed and ate reindeer, musk oxen, polar bears, and seals. In short: tons of fat and practically zero carbs. Not surprisingly, Schwatka initially noted in his journal “an apparent weakness and inability to perform severe exertive, fatiguing journeys.” But after two or three weeks the feeling passed. It was setting the hour record, the maximum distance a cyclist can cover in a velodrome in 60 minutes.
