ORION IS NOT A political magazine — at least not in any traditional sense. We willingly cede the territory of politics to the other magazines and media outlets that are better suited to tackle it, while we, in turn, focus on a broad exploration of what it will take for people to have a healthy and sustainable relationship with the planet.
Yet on this page, like the moth to the proverbial flame, we find ourselves drawn again and again to write about politics, especially national politics. Washington’s haplessness at generating needed change makes it hard to leave it unaddressed. Even those who believe, as we do, in the power of a grassroots, bottom-up approach to social change also understand how badly America needs an effective, top-down system of policy implementation.…
