A Survey Of British Tenors Before Peter Pears MARSTON 5302 0-2 (3CDS) NEW RELEASES OF HISTORICAL vocal recordings from Marston are deliciously unpredictable. They drop ‘when ready’ and when they arrive, their lineups of bygone singers are chock-full of surprises. Call it the shock of the old. This latest multi-disc set is typical: 75 tracks presenting 32 tenors in opera, oratorio and art song curated from recordings made between 1901 and 1950. The common element is not that all are strictly speaking British tenors (Evan Williams was an American, though presented himself as Welsh), nor even that all are male (famed female tenor Ruby Helder is on the roster). In Nov. 2020, a new production of George Benjamin’s Written on Skin at Oper Köln featured 28-year old Persian-Canadian countertenor Cameron Shahbazi as ‘First Angel/Boy’ opposite Québec soprano Magali Simard-Galdès. Benjamin’s celebrated contemporary masterpiece was a perfect vehicle for Shahbazi. Critics unanimously praised the sheer beauty of his tone, his angelic elegance and striking good looks. Eager to get acquainted with the young singer who left Canada after graduating from University of Toronto in 2015, I caught up with him in London. Among the many changes wrought by the coronavirus pandemic has been a transformation in the scale of live music. In certain locations, opera companies who would normally be in the middle of a season bulging with large-scale works now find themselves opting for smaller orchestrations of classics in order to keep performing whilst conforming to strict health regulations. Fullscore reductions have a long history, with many composers reorchestrating their own work as well as older compositions, sometimes to accommodate hall size, and frequently to fill pockets. Canadian companies like Opera By Request, Voicebox: Opera In Concert, and Tapestry Opera have long presented reduced works, operas in concert, or chamber operas as part of their respective mandates, but whether or not reduced versions will translate to larger organizations remains to be…
