After the scheduled New Year’s date was rained off, we went back up there a couple of weeks later to run the event on Australia Day weekend. The conditions were what I can politely describe as less than ideal. And by that, I mean they were terrible. PROJECT ANIMAL With the ‘Ace of Spades’ Falcon gasser hitting the track, Tim and the crew at The Krysler Shop have turned their focus on to a new Saturday-morning build — a street and strip 1930 Model A dubbed ‘Animal’. The body, chopped back in the 1970s in New Plymouth, was purchased from Sharpy in Wellington and now sits on a Kiwi Konnection ’32 chassis pinched specifically for a Model A. The wheelbase has been stretched two inches at both the front and rear, with the rear frame rails kicked up and shortened to nail the stance. Powering this project is a Ford 532ci big block with forged internals, Carrillo pistons, Air Flow Research heads, and a roller cam. Topping it off is a magnesium 6/71 blower with twin 750…

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Beach Hop, the team are building something truly special: a 1966 Ford Mustang as the Repco Beach Hop 25 prize car. The restoration is well underway, with the crew stripping it down in record time during the first deconstruction session. The windshield, rear screen, engine, and transmission are being removed to prepare the car for a cosmetic and mechanical overhaul. I have to kick off this story with a huge shout-out to my Downtime tour mates. First up, Shaun Jury with ‘BARELY’. He was hit with a coil failure right at the start line, which left him running on just five cylinders for his Pro Series skid. But Shaun wasn’t done yet. Liam Lawson’s promotion to Red Bull Racing alongside Max Verstappen for the 2025 Formula 1 (F1) season may have surprised some, but not David Dicker, founder of Rodin Cars and one of Lawson’s key supporters. Dicker first saw Lawson’s talent back in 2018, when the young Kiwi tested an old Formula 3 car at Rodin’s private track before heading to Europe to race. WILD BUNCH HEATING UP There must have been something in the air over the past few months, as the PBs coming out of the door-car field have been sensational. Many of those PBs were run at the Wild Bunch Wars at Masterton Motorplex in late January. One of those notable runs was from none other than the original Mr Wild Bunch, Chris Tynan, who was back behind the wheel of son-in-law Kane Douche’s ’55 Chev — a car originally owned by Tynan. The last time NZV8 attended the Kumeu Classic Car & Hot Rod Festival was a few years ago now, but being in the area this time around, it was a no-brainer to check it out — especially for the festival’s 25th anniversary. The early hours of a Friday morning are an odd time to be scrolling for cars, but that’s exactly what Todd Holland was doing when he stumbled across the 1984 Chevrolet El Camino that would soon fill his workshop.
