October 8 1871 The Great Chicago Fire began in the early morning of October 8, 1871 (153 years ago this month). The fire burned throughout the day and night and continued into the next day. The blaze spread across an area about 6 km long and almost 1.5 km wide, and it completely destroyed the centre of the city. Chicago was the second biggest city in the US at this time, with a population of around 300,000. By the time the fire had burned itself out, 100,000 people were homeless and around 300 people had lost their lives. Rare Bunny Pops Up Hikers on the island of Sumatra in western Indonesia enjoyed a rare encounter with one of the world’s most mysterious rabbits. The Sumatran striped rabbit – known for the watermelon-like stripes in its fur – has been spotted only a few times in the last 50 years. Incredibly, the rabbit didn’t seem too bothered by the hikers, stopping alongside them long enough to allow them to film it on the forest floor. The Channel Tunnel is the longest underwater tunnel in the world. It was built under the English Channel at the Straits of Dover, and links Folkestone in England with Coquelles in France. It took 13,000 workers, technicians and engineers six years to build the tunnel. Construction began in 1988 and was completed in 1994. At the time, it cost around £4.65 billion to construct. In today’s money, that is €14.5 billion! Workers started at both ends of the tunnel and intended to meet in the middle. However, the digging was more difficult on the French side, so the English side made better progress. This month, let us introduce you to the bizarre sport of ‘gurning’ – the sport of pulling faces! Believe it or not, the Gurning World Championships takes place every September at the Egremont Crab Fair in Cumbria, England. You would be forgiven for thinking that gurning is a new sport that a very bored person came up with while making faces in the mirror, but in fact gurning has been around for a really long time!
