The Palace of Versailles is one of the most splendid buildings in the world. It was originally built as a hunting lodge by King Louis XIII (13th) of France in 1623 and later extended into a small palace in 1631. In 1682 Louis XIV (14th) moved into the palace and began to turn it into the magnificent building it is today. Louis was known as the Sun King and he spent a huge amount of money on the palace – around 3,000 workers were brought in to extend it. The Maglev train is a special type of train that uses magnetic levitation – that’s right, it floats using magnets – to travel at super-high speeds. Sounds unbelievable? Well, it’s true! Train passengers in China, Japan and Korea can enjoy travelling at 300 kilometres per hour in comfort thanks to this amazing technology. The name Maglev is short for ‘magnetic levitation’. The train runs on a specially built U-shaped track that has magnets in its base. The train carriages also have magnets in their base. When the two sets of magnets meet, they push against each other (repel each other) and that is how the train floats. The rafflesia is the biggest flower in the world. Native to the forests of Indonesia, Sumatra, Thailand and the Philippines – countries in South-East Asia – the flower can grow up to 1 metre in width and can weigh as much as 11 kg. Its five large, leathery petals come in shades of spotty reds, oranges and yellows, making it a truly magnificent flower to look at. The Weather Girls A new Irish children’s book that captures the incredible story of Irish heroine Maureen Sweeney has been released. The Weather Girls by Irish author Sarah Webb tells the story of how Mayo woman Maureen’s weather forecasts helped the Allied forces (Great Britain, the Soviet Union and the United States being the main three) on D-Day – one of the most important days of World War II. Maureen was a young woman living in Blacksod in Co. Mayo. In Ireland, a police officer is called a garda. The garda’s job is to protect people, to enforce the law, and to solve crimes. Gardaí work in garda stations but may spend part of their duty on patrol – either on foot, on a bicycle or in a patrol car. Hola! I am a jabiru – a large stork, and one of the tallest flying birds of Central and South America. I am 140 cm tall and weigh 8 kg. My feathers are mostly white, while my head and neck are bare and black. I have a wide red band around the base of my neck, and my nape is covered with down-like whitish feathers.
