Matthias Goerne was just five or six years old when he heard Winterreise for the first time. The recording, from 1945, featured the prodigious German tenor Peter Anders with pianist Michael Raucheisen. Despite its 80-year-old patina, the experience still resonates today.
“It was made in Berlin when it was completely under attack,” he explains, chatting over Zoom. “There are stories about how they had to repeat, because when they dropped the bombs, you could hear the explosions on the microphones. I have to say, it's very, very interesting for me. This legendary, fantastic, beautiful voice was so strong even when he sang piano. The war was really in its last moments, but it was still dangerous, and I can feel this aspect added into it.”
