Fair Oak Art & Craft Society The Fair Oak Art & Craft Society is holding an exhibition of original paintings and craft at Fair Oak Village Hall, Shorts Road, Fair Oak, Hampshire SO50 7EJ on 12 and 13 November, 10am to 4.30pm each day. The venue offers light refreshments, homemade cakes and pastries, plenty of free off-road parking and easy wheelchair access. Visitors will have an opportunity to vote for their favourite painting and play tombola, and younger visitors can make their own Christmas cards. Admission is £1. LEARNING OBJECTIVES During an average session painting out of doors, I will complete a work in no more than four hours. The light and weather change, and even the flowers open and fall apart in that time. Having a rapid technique certainly helps with this, and however complicated a subject may seem, it can often be made easier by following some simple basics. I start my drawing by simplifying the compositional shapes of forms and major flowers. I then decide whether to paint some of the brightest colours first on white to keep their intensity, or use a coloured ground for drama and vibrancy. I usually work from mid-tones down to darks then go back to the mid-tones before eventually working up to the highlights. In this…
