This title has won the 2025 Booker Prize, announced on 10 November. I read Flesh earlier this year and have, since then, fervently hoped that it would win. I also read, once the list was announced, the other five shortlisted titles. Each is recognition-worthy in its own way, but Flesh definitely has the edge for compelling originality, humanity, poignancy and grittiness.
Istvan is a Hungarian immigrant who comes to Britain. An everyman type, he lives on the edge of things, works in menial jobs, meets women and has a lot of sex because he’s driven by his basic needs. The clue is in the title.
Eventually he strikes lucky – sort of – and, quite casually, marries one of these women. And…
