Robbie Gordon and Jack Nurse are a theatrical powerhouse. They met at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and have been working together since 2012. “Then, in 2017 we launched our company, Wonder Fools, which is now also a registered charity and it’s been all go ever since” says Robbie who writes, directs, co-directs the company and sometimes acts. The overall purpose is to take theatre to places with little or no provision, to reach new audiences and to provide work and other opportunities at all levels. We all know that the arts are in peril – especially in schools, unless you are lucky enough either to have an exceptionally enlightened head or to be in an area where some wonderful charitable foundation is supporting arts education. Most of us have to struggle on with heads for whom the arts are not a priority in areas where no one with the power to make things happen is interested. Well, it seems to me that we have two choices. Either we accept the situation, and the arts slip away or we look for ways, however, tiny for bringing the arts quietly to life in our own classrooms. The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, owned, funded and administered by City of London is one of several UK Conservatoires with the potential for collaboration between music, drama and production arts. But – with its home in the Barbican – it is the only one in the heart of London. And the range of activities is huge. Of course, the Guildhall’s core business is Higher Education, but it’s a complex organisation and there’s a huge amount going on. Where did you grow up? Portugal. My father is British – he teaches English – and my mother is Portuguese, so I grew up totally bilingual. As you can hear, my RP is more RP than most British speakers of it! I’ve had to work hard at cultural references though because we only lived in the UK briefly while my scientist mum was doing her PhD at Imperial College. Apart from that it was just visits to grandparents. The good thing about it though is that it means I have an ear for languages and I really enjoyed studying accents phonetically while I was training at Birmingham Conservatoire. Justin Audibert is lively, articulate and warm. We’ve met before to talk about projects at Unicorn Theatre. Now he’s a West Sussex man and delighted with his new, relatively rural life. “Yes, I’ve moved to Chichester with my family” he says happily. “I can walk to the theatre in 20 minutes or cycle in four and my daughter, who is six has settled into a nearby school. The cavernous Brockley Jack pub near Crofton Park Station, SE London has a long history. It was a coaching stop, a hotel, and when I was a teenager growing up nearby in the 1960s, so disreputable that I was forbidden to go near it! Then in 1992 something magical happened: three actors living in the area developed the north end of it as a theatre and suddenly there was a whole new lease of life and an unlikely corner of southeast London was on the theatre map.
