A PROFESSIONAL chemist by day, Larry Malone appreciates metals like silver and copper on a molecular level. But he’s also a self-taught jeweler who transforms those metals into chain-mail bracelets and necklaces that drape like second skins. “It’s just a form of weaving with metal,” he says. “But it has a neat effect. There’s something about the feel of it when it’s done right.” Malone’s talent evolved from tragedy. His daughter-in-law passed away at an early age, and she left behind a beading kit. Officially, they’re charcuterie boards. But we can’t imagine putting salami and goat cheese on these gorgeous platters, created by Brian Presnell of Indy Urban Hardwood and painted by local artists such as Kyle Ragsdale and Johnny McKee. The Harrison Center (harrisoncenter.org/porchparty-platters) hosted a gallery show of the handcrafted planks of maple, walnut, and more in August and has been selling the remaining ones since. Presnell spends most of his time making commercial furniture and running an urban lumberyard dedicated to saving ash wood that would otherwise be mulched as the emerald ash borer makes its way through Indy’s trees. EVERY SO OFTEN, I get a phone call or email from someone wanting to make a movie or television show based on a book I’ve writt en. When this first happened, 25 years ago, I almost quit my day job in expectation of untold riches and began looking for a home in Beverly Hills. The TV people strung me along for a month, then asked if I could write a book with more sex and violence. I declined, gratuitous sex and violence being inconsistent with my day job as a Quaker pastor. So the TV people went on to do a wholesome family show about serial killers. Early this year, Carmel’s only skateboard shop opened on Rangeline Road. A partnership between Aaron Vaughn and Nick Holub, Minus Carmel (622 S. Road Trip For three years, hardcore fans of Neapolitanstyle pizza have found their way to Greencastle for the surprisingly authentic woodfired version at Bridge’s Craft Pizza & Wine Bar. Now, they can pick up some equally on-the-mark loaves of chewy sourdough and rustic semolina bread from its sibling BreadWorks by Bridges two blocks away. The high-volume bakery opened in October and shares the pizzeria’s chef, Sal Fernandez, a California transplant who trained at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley and brings the French boulangerie concept to a new two-story building that is not your average bakery. FOR A FEW MONTHS in 1950, Kurt Vonnegut juggled three different careers. While he was working as a publicist at GE, he was also dreaming about being a writer. That dream—and its lack of compensation—eventually led to his third and most unlikely profession: fashion designer. Vonnegut imagined a trendy bow tie made out of the ribbon the Atomic Energy Commission used to rope off radioactive hotspots. He pieced together a prototype and sent it to a friend in the clothing industry.
