That’s why we need to create a concept for the background art that works in harmony with the style of the characters in any given project. Years ago I discovered watercolour ground, and it completely changed how I paint. The way it enables you to create such wonderful textures and vibrant colours instantly hooked me in. You can utilise so many of these techniques on watercolour paper as well, though I encourage you to give watercolour ground a go as it’s a truly unique experience. It takes a bit of patience and getting used to, so be sure to approach your work with an open mind and take joy in playing with the paint. On top of the new techniques that watercolour ground opens up, I also love to mix in gold leaf, metallic pigments and gouache to create highlights. Where did you grow up and how has this inf luenced your art? I grew up in the Netherlands. Though we’re known for our Old Masters and proud of that heritage, I didn’t find any art schools that would teach me how to paint and draw figuratively. I got the feeling it was looked down on by art universities. When I tell this to my students now, I notice this is common among figurative artists. There seems to be a real divide between figurative and contemporar y art practice. I moved to the UK to pursue my goals and found more of a thriving figurative scene, which invigorates me.
