When we started planning this special issue, I was trying to get approval from the City of Cape Town for a small project at my house in Tamboerskloof, our creative editor Marian was busy with an entire home renovation in Plettenberg Bay, and our food editor Johané had just finished an extension on her family's home in Durbanville. On the outside When renovating her home in Simon's Town, architectural interior consultant Arti Canaris of Artic Design Solutions converted a section of the downstairs area into an Airbnb holiday unit while she transformed the top level into a home for herself. Part of the makeover included a new carport with her en-suite bedroom built above it. Corrugated aluminium sheets, one of Arti's favourite materials to work with, were used to clad the home's exterior. “This blends in with the South African Navy warehouses in our area and adds a sense of history,” says Arti. “The darker colour also blends into the environment; so much so that when I walk on the beach and look up to see my house, it's quite a struggle to find it!” A laser-cut side…

You can't just knock down any interior wall when you renovate, says Rory Bands of architectural firm The Plan Co, who helped Francoisnette with her project. Interior walls often need to be removed to improve the flow of a home. “It's especially necessary when separate rooms hinder interaction between members of the household,” says Rory. However, not just any wall can be demolished. “If you break out a load-bearing interior wall, the roof's support is gone and it may collapse,” he cautions. “Francoisnette's house was added to in stages over the years and some interior walls were initially exterior walls, which are usually thicker as they are built with a double layer of bricks. Naturally, with a chef in residence, the entire house was planned around the kitchen. Although Herman doesn't like wearing bright colours or buying bold décor, he feels completely different about colour when it comes to cooking. “Anything to do with food should be colourful,” he says. “When I cook something, I use a red pot – or any colour for that matter, as long as it's bright.” As a result, the kitchen cabinets are a feast for the eyes with bright yellow, red and blue cookware. I started with Luscious Lemon from Duram,” explains Lefras. “But it was too bright so I took the almost full can of paint back to Build It in Craighall Park. I wanted a shade of mustard, so they mixed the lemon-yellow with Plascon Grecian Gold.
