HELEN HAD BEEN FEELING A BREAK WITH REALITY for a decade or more by the time she set foot on the plane. It felt to her like a consistent state of dissociation, as though always out of phase. Everything around her that didn’t feel like a straightout lie at least felt like a forgery. Every movie, book and record a counterfeit. Every conversation, relationship and event a photocopy. The holiday, then, was designed to realign her senses, to ground her in some way. But it took her no time to realise that travelling just replaced the sense of the inauthentic with the sense of the uncanny: the smell of aeroplane plastic; food served in satchels; miniature bottles of bourbon that she used as a carrier fluid for Codeine and Valium…

Mariana Enríquez is an awardwinning Argentine novelist and journalist, whose work has been translated into more than twenty languages. She is the author of Things We Lost in the Fire, The Dangers of Smoking in Bed – which was shortlisted for the 2021 International Booker Prize – and Our Share of Night, which was awarded the prestigious Premio Herralde de Novela. Alice Whitmore is a writer and literary translator from Spanish and Italian. Her translation of Mariana Dimópulos’s Imminence was awarded the 2021 NSW Premier’s Translation Prize. She is the translations editor at Cordite Poetry Review and an associate editor at Giramondo, and lives on Peek Whurrung country. ‘Main Building, Tenth Floor’ was translated for the 2025 Melbourne Writers Festival translation slam. Image 1 is derived from the Autograph Book (1909–1916) of Colina Cameron, my great-grandmother. Image 2 is a newspaper clipping ‘Woman Kicked by a Horse’ in Mirror (Perth, WA: 1921–1956) Saturday 28 November 1925, p.2. The woman in question Mrs Colin (Annie) Cameron, was my great-great-grandmother. Image 3 is the indecipherable interior of a Victorian era greeting card from the archives of my great-grandmother, Colina Anderson nee Cameron. Images 4 and 5 are the front and back of an 1872 receipt for the burial plot of my great-great-great-grandparents’ infant son Hugh, who died from unknown causes. On the back, in handwritten blue ink are my great-great-greatgrandmother Sarah Gillies Cameron’s words, reading ‘My Beloved Love Hugh’. These are the only recorded words I have from this grandmother.…
