Years ago, when I was an editor at another publication, I was among a group of editors invited to meet with Serena Williams and hear her speak about her life, her sport, and her future aspirations. Toward the end of the meeting, someone in the group asked her why she thought there were so many young Black rising stars in women’s tennis compared with men’s.
