How to Change the Throw’s Size or the Pattern’s Scale While Kathy was designing this throw, she thought about ways to change it up to suit the needs of different households and weavers. Here are a few ideas to help you to alter this project. To make this blanket wider or narrower, add or subtract repeats of warp ends. One repeat of the color pattern (152 ends) represents 9½" of width. If you change the width, remember to adjust your warp and weft amounts accordingly. To enlarge the scale of the plaid while leaving the size of the throw unchanged, double the number of ends used for each color in the threading and reduce the number of threading repeats from four to two. Change Up the Weft Colors and Stripes If you’re new to experimenting with colors, Véronique suggests that you weave a sample to try out options before starting on your project. To change ribbon colors: If you don’t want to follow the treadlings as described for Runner 1 or 2, you can repeat a color segment from one of them or change the color order in them. Or you can replace some—or all—of the weft colors with your own choices: Gather all the options, line up the cones or bobbins in an order you like, and then weave your way through the lineup. Weave Easier and Better • Susan changed the original table square tie-up to make a treadling that is balanced and changes sides for every pick. The new tie-up makes it easier to know where you are in the pattern. The white stripes start and stop with picks on treadle 6 (using the right foot), and the colorful stripes start and stop with picks on treadle 1 (using the left foot). • Every weft stripe has an uneven number of picks, which helps in distributing weft tails. Each stripe will start on one side of your warp and finish on the other. • If you decide to weave napkins only, you may have enough warp for 7 of them—depending on how careful you are when tying on. • Using sewing thread…

I’ll begin by saying that this wasn’t planned. Last fall, our 29-year-old refrigerator started having random cold flashes and freezing everything in the bottom drawer. We handled that problem by fiddling with the thermostat. But then, in the dead of winter, the ice maker decided that while it could make ice, it would not release it. A consultation with our local appliance repair shop indicated that repair was no longer a good option. It was time for a new fridge. An exploration of the relationship between weaving, abstraction, craft, and fashion is on view at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction includes about 150 works in a range of mediums—from textiles and basketry to painting, drawing, sculpture, and video.
