Macramé is an ancient craft dating from Babylonian times. At its most basic twine or string is cut into lengths and retied using a series of knots. But macramé can also be very ornate, involving hundreds of tiny twists, a variety of knots and incorporating beads, shells and other embellishments. It was used by 13th-century Arabian weavers and was popular in Victorian England as a means of making intricate lace for curtains, tablecloths, bedspreads, doilies and coasters. Sailors of old used macramé to weave ship ropes and hammocks. If you’re anything like me, you may find the advice to “rest and recuperate” rather difficult to follow. I’m an active relaxer and energiser bunny with a busy work and social schedule. At the house where I grew up, we had Japanese honeysuckle growing wild all around. My brother and I loved it and would pull the flowers off and suck out the sweet nectar.
