The LIV Golf season began earlier this month in Saudi Arabia, and this year there have been some significant changes to several aspects of the competition. Some were made in an effort to finally secure world ranking points – it was confirmed earlier this month the top ten finishers in each event will receive points – while others were introduced to help build the 13 team franchises that separate LIV Golf from other circuits. Shot on location at Salgados Golf Club 1 Your lead arm will only be straight if the trail arm is folding at an appropriate rate. If the latter folds too much, the lead arm has to bend as both hands have hold of the grip. If you imagine the lead shoulder is the centre point, the lead arm controls the swing radius. If you fail to control the radius, and the lead arm has to extend in the downswing, you’ll lose the wrist angles early, which can lead to a number of common faults as you scramble to make decent contact. Its course’s original nine holes now play as the extremely tough 1st and fascinating closing eight. Three new holes were added in 1992 before it was extended to a full 18 ten years later. Value is in the eye of the beholder Reading the letter in your February issue bemoaning the lack of golf on terrestrial TV, and the suggested effect this has on the number of new players, I would take a different view. First, the BBC paid lip service to the tournaments it broadcast, only covering the ‘crown jewel’ events and often interrupting them for the 4.30 from Kempton Park. Sky, on the other hand, broadcasts every day of every event live with superb coverage. Furthermore, Sky has been covering golf since approximately 1995, if memory serves me correctly, and golf participation is apparently booming. What is a straight back, straight through putting stroke? By Top 50 Coach James Jankowski This is a big talking point so what is actually happening? We set up with the putter shaft inclined from vertical, usually around 20˚. If the shaft tracks on that plane, the sweetspot arcs around the circumference. From above, it appears to move slightly inwards towards you, but more noticeably up and down. As it does so, the face naturally opens and delofts going back. This is not forced. It is a result of the set-up and the fact that we stand to one side of the ball. The shaft may appear to track fairly straight but the sweetspot doesn’t. EMBEDDED BALL IN BUNKER FACE As we see out winter, many of us will have experienced an embedded ball in recent times. For a ball embedded in its own pitch mark on the fairway or in the rough we are entitled to free relief under the rules. But when the ball comes to rest in longer grass near a bunker, it can be a little trickier to determine the correct course of action. Under the rules there are some requirements that must be met to take embedded ball relief. A ball can only be embedded in non-sandy areas of the general area. If your ball is plugged on the putting green you can repair ball marks there anyway, and there is no relief in bunkers or penalty areas. Part of…

My putts don’t roll properly – what could be causing this? Steve Talbot, via email Before you start blaming yourself entirely, it may be worth a little check of your putter loft. The direct consequence of incorrect loft is real issues with speed control. If the loft is too low for your stroke, the ball doesn’t get above the grass quickly enough and can hop unpredictably. Conversely, if the loft is too high, the ball launches too high, causing excessive air time and friction upon landing. A great way of checking the loft of your putter is by using your phone to record a slow-motion video from face-on at impact. Marking a line or cross on the side of the ball facing the camera will highlight if anything is amiss.…

I came across an old photo while sorting out a rather dishevelled book shelf recently. It was a picture taken at my first US Masters in 1980 and, of the several golf writers in it plus a gleamingly triumphant Seve Ballesteros, I am the only one still alive. Shot on location at Salgados Golf Club 1 Backswing length will dictate how far you can hit it, but we focus too much on what happens in the backswing, then react to that. To improve from around 20 to 60 yards, think about controlling the length of your swing both ways. Two different mid-length swings with each of three or four wedges mean six to eight different yardages. Having read a lot about the Quinta do Lago resort, I was excited to go and try it out for myself.
