I love bream. There, I said it. Southern fishos and seasoned bream anglers may wonder what I’m banging on about, but as an ex-North Queensland resident, that statement is liberating. In a tropical sphere where barra, mangrove Jack, reef and pelagic fish dominate, the humble bream doesn’t carry much clout. Similarly, in many regions across Australia, bream are often overlooked as genuine sport targets.
Bream don’t boast the epic proportions of giant trevally, the aerial spectacles of queenfish, or conjure the allure of mulloway. However, downsize to an ultralight spin outfit and a handful of small lures and, on a relative scale, bream emulate the traits of most prized sport fish.
