THE FRDC has reported on campaigns being developed in South Australia, Queensland and Western Australia aimed at shifting their current primary target species to alternatives which are not under the same pressures. In SA, that could be swapping leatherjackets, blue mackerel and sea sweep for King George whiting and snapper. In Queensland, mahi mahi, amberjack and cobia for pearl perch and snapper. In WA, mahi mahi and marlin for baldchin groper and snapper. THE new federal ministry has been sworn in, as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed Labor senators and MPs at the first federal caucus since the party won the federal election. Tanya Plibersek will head up the Environment and Water portfolio, covering marine parks. Meanwhile, Murray Watt, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and Emergency Management will cover fisheries issues, like “super trawlers” and offshore quotas. The coastline flanking Cape Cuvier in WA has been described as the “Mecca” of Land Based Game in Australia. It’s on many LBG anglers’ bucket list and plenty have made the pilgrimage. I’ve been a little slow to appreciate the excitement of impoundment fishing over the years. No matter how many times you hit the water in search of fish a loose plan of attack needs to be devised around how you’ll tackle things from the get go. I recently spent three weeks in the Northern Territory fishing on the Daly River. The purpose of this trip was to fish in two major tournaments, the Barra Classic and the Barra Nationals. Both of these events were held on the magnificent Daly River, and these competitions attract some of the best anglers from around the country to compete against each other. Between the two, I’ve fished in over 40 of these competitions. They are fantastic social events and both are superbly run. We often talk about the fun factor of boating. We also talk a lot about gear – the boats, the electronics and the engines. We talk less about towing. But understanding towing is a necessity for anyone who owns a trailer boat and it deserves some attention. Towing shouldn’t be difficult or complicated, although it should be understood and performed properly. When things go wrong towing, they typically go very wrong.
