Trolling around the Port Stephens offshore grounds they call the Carpark, it didn’t take long to raise a nice size striped marlin on one of our teasers. Quickly, a pre-rigged live slimy mackerel bait was pulled from the bait tube and tossed out over the transom. As the boat’s speed slowed up a little, reducing the wash, the live bait had nowhere to hide and sent out the nervous vibes attracting a swift attack. The angler holding the rod felt the solid bite and the circle hook found its mark creating an instant reaction. SOME years back we joined in the chorus of opposition to attempts to bring the supertrawler Margiris into Australia’s small pelagic fishery, to exploit the under harvested AFMA-set quota for jack mackerel, redbait and similar species vital to the open ocean food chain. Thankfully, the plan collapsed and the Dutch-owned trawler, currently the world’s second largest fishing vessel, departed. It’s now been caught dumping some 100,000 blue whiting, a northern hemisphere species used in processed fish products, in the Atlantic Ocean. The company claims that the fish were lost when a net ruptured, but Sea Shepherd has offered a different version. It believes the fish were deliberately dumped as unwanted bycatch, a practice illegal in the EU. France’s maritime minster has asked the country’s national fishing surveillance authority to launch…

HOW do we class fish species as game fish, sport fish or table fish? Many people would assume that game fish are classified as such by the International and Australian Game Fishing Associations. This includes tuna, billfish, sharks, kingfish, etc. Species that are found in our oceans, that swim fast and fight hard. The list of IGFA species is quite extensive and not particularly limited to fish that are ocean inhabitants, fight especially hard or are difficult to land. I’M the type of person who loves going on holidays, and much to my wife’s horror, many of these involve fishing. I know I’m not alone, and that like me, Covid and now severe flooding, have made the last year or two difficult from a travelling point of view. Some of the heaviest rain I have ever seen fell along Australia’s East Coast in late 2021 and early 2022. One of the most torrential downpours will live in my memory for a long time as it occurred on the eve of a long-awaited fishing trip. When you think of fishing for Australian bass most people picture images of clear freshwater areas filled with snags and lily pads. While those areas are fantastic places to fish, especially in the spring an summer, the lower tidal areas which take in a much larger volume of water, also hold a lot of fish if you know when and how to find them. Those who choose farming as a living often say it’s a cruel and twisted game. Right now it’s a good season with lush pasture, fat stock and record breaking crops. Times are good! Just two years ago, however, we were in drought. The flooded section of the Macquarie Marsh we were now zipping along in the tinny was just a dust bowl.
