NSW’s DPI Fisheries has created a network of artificial offshore reefs using funds sourced from the state’s recreational fishing fee (aka “licence”) reserves. Currently there are artificial reefs off Sydney, South Sydney, the Shoalhaven, Port Macquarie, Merimbula, Newcastle, Wollongong and Tweed Heads. New reef modules for Batemans Bay and Jervis Bay will be completed and positioned in 2021 and 2022. For the next round of reef locations, Fisheries invited submissions via a survey on the DPI website. In the NT, there is a network of 118 reef pyramids positioned to create a “fishing journey” for anglers, taking them past multiple fishing destinations including older artificial reefs.
