The FIA is to mandate that Formula 1 power unit suppliers with expiring contracts must still make current engines available to their former customer teams for any testing of previous cars (TPC) for 2026. Half of the grid will switch engine partners for F1’s new technical era: Sauber (to become Audi) will move from Ferrari to its in-house engine, Aston Martin from Mercedes to Honda, Alpine from its own engine to Mercedes, while Red Bull, plus Racing Bulls, will run a brand-new power unit that is developed and built at its Milton Keynes facility. Appropriately enough, the town of Monterey outside which Laguna sits was a centrepoint of the counterculture revolution of 1967 thanks to its music festival. While Jaguar team boss James Barclay is heading off to McLaren to work on its upcoming World Endurance Championship programme, two-time Formula E series runner-up Nick Cassidy looks to be poised for a move from Jag to Stellantis, with that team tipped for a rebrand from Maserati to sister marque Citroen for 2025-26. Briton Freddie Slater has moved back into the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine points lead, but an exclusion at Imola means the challenge of Matteo De Palo is still alive. Slater and his Prema Racing car pulverised the field to win the first race at Paul Ricard by almost eight seconds from Trident racer De Palo. He doubled up the following day to narrowly head home Prema teammate Rashid Al Dhaheri, with De Palo demoted from fifth to sixth for overtaking beyond track limits. WHEN THE MANTHEY PORSCHE crossed the line to take the LMGT3 victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours in June, Richard Lietz was able to celebrate a sixth class success in the world’s most celebrated endurance classic. The long-serving Porsche factory driver has conquered the event with 11 different drivers, in four different types of 911, in three different classes, over a 19-year period. For a man who started out with aspirations of following his father into rallying, and called time on single-seaters after finding he was “not prepared for the amount of testing and everything you need to be successful”, the Austrian’s honours list is staggering. Kalle Rovanpera claimed a maiden victory on his home event of Rally Finland with a dominant performance to head a Toyota top-five lockout. The two-time World Rally champion recorded 10 stage wins to defeat team-mate Takamoto Katsuta by 39.2 seconds in the fastest rally in WRC history as he took the victory with an average speed of 80.7mph. Sebastien Ogier completed the podium ahead of Elfyn Evans and Sami Pajari to seal a first top-five lockout for any manufacturer since Lancia at Rally Portugal in 1990. The British Touring Car Championship field dropped to 23 for the Croft round in early August owing to the absence of the One Motorsport Honda squad, with the future of lead driver Josh Cook very much open to conjecture. A period of ill health for team owner Steve Dudman meant he was unable to oversee his various businesses including the race team. The squad announced that it would be standing down for Croft and the mid-August Knockhill round, “but the hope is that both Honda Civic Type R machines will compete again later in the season”. Classic Sports Car Club Jaguar Championship racer Mark Bennett is targeting a title challenge aboard his new self-built X-Type estate next year after the Class C car took outright victory in just its fourth competitive outing. The championship’s first front-wheel-drive machine joins a growing fleet of cars from the workshops of Derby-based Jaguar parts specialist Auto Reserve. After building and racing the squad’s supercharged S-Type R (a race winner in Auto Reserve boss Andrew Harper’s hands) and turbo-diesel X350, Bennett debuted the X-Type at Cadwell Park in May, qualifying fourth. A dedicated class for Lotus 51s is set to feature in the Historic Formula Ford 1600 Championship next year after a special parade formed part of the recent Brands Hatch Superprix event. Eight of the machines – which, alongside converted Lotus 31 F3s, formed the grid for the first standalone FF1600 race at Brands in 1967 – ran for three laps in Kent. Max Verstappen shut down perhaps the biggest on-off saga of an otherwise tepid silly season when he confirmed that he will indeed be staying at Red Bull for 2026, while Mercedes is set to extend the deals of George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli for next season. Verstappen has a Red Bull contract until the end of 2028, but with various exit clauses that had triggers around the summer break. Turkish Grand Prix bosses say that they are ready to step in and host a race as early as next year if any event is forced to cancel. The Istanbul Park circuit was recently transferred to TOSFED – the Turkish Automobile Sports Federation, and its president Eren Uclertopragi is adamant that he would like to see F1 back in Turkey on a permanent basis rather than just a short-term deal. The country last hosted F1 during the COVID-19-impacted 2020 and 2021 seasons as a stopgap solution to fill out the calendar. Up until recently, Leonardo Fornaroli couldn’t buy a race win for love nor money. He proved in Formula 3 last year that he could win a championship, but hadn’t taken a chequered flag first since his 2021 Italian F4 season. The Eurocup-3 series is set to bring big fields of oldphilosophy Formula 3 cars back to Europe by adoping the Dallara D326 – the Italian giant’s new take on the concept – for 2026. The Spanish-run series was introduced in 2023 using a modified version of the Tatuus Formula Regional chassis and Autotecnicatuned Alfa Romeo turbo engine, and this year has attracted up to 30 cars. Mercedes has offered a glimpse of how its next-generation GT3 will look. It has released camouflaged teaser images of a car that is set to succede its ultra-successful SLS and AMG GT3 racers. The German manufacturer didn’t mention racing or the GT3 category on the limited revealing of a car that it is calling the Concept AMG GT Track Sport. But it hinted at its future in competition by describing it as an “uncompromising concept vehicle” that has been “designed for absolute driving dynamic peak performance to set new standards and record times”. Braced for a heavy landing, Adrien Fourmaux’s Hyundai takes dramatic flight over one of the many jumps that have helped put Rally Estonia on the map. This year’s instalment of fast gravel stages proved to be a record and history maker on many levels. TOCA has terminated its contract with organisers of the proposed TOCA Junior championship and has now invited expressions of interest from other parties looking to run a junior series. TOCA Junior was due to be part of the British Touring Car support package this season, but in February the decision was made to postpone its launch until 2026 amid concerns about a lack of teams and drivers signing up to compete. 1974 FERRARI 308 GT4 LM Fancy something a bit different? This one-off was developed and built for Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team. Emissions laws following the fuel crisis meant that the 308 GT4 was the only Ferrari Chinetti could sell to his American customers and so needed to raise its profile – he decided to go racing. The resulting three-litre V8 machine was 200kg lighter and 50bhp more powerful than the production version. Chassis 08020 made its debut at Le Mans in 1974, driven by Giancarlo Gagliardi and Jean-Louis Lafosse, but retired with clutch trouble. Brazilian Ferrari Driver Academy recruit Rafael Camara wrapped up the Formula 3 title with his fourth victory of the season – all of them in feature races – at a wet Hungaroring. It means that the rookie, who came into the category as the reigning Formula Regional European champion, went into the month-long wait before the Monza finale able to reflect on a job well done. Any expansion of the World Endurance Championship will come with an additional race in Europe. The admission from the series organisation appears to give hope to Silverstone’s aspirations to bring the WEC back to Britain for the first time since 2019. Should the WEC push on with its attempt to grow beyond its traditional eight rounds in 2027, an extra event would “definitely” be in Europe, said WEC CEO Frederic Lequien. GT World Challenge Europe is enjoying ‘McLaren season’ it seems, after two wins for the Garage 59-run 720S GT3 of Marvin Kirchhofer and Benji Goethe. The pair won race two at both Misano and Magny-Cours in the two recent Sprint Cup events, the maiden wins in the series for the car and the first McLaren success since 2016, when Rob Bell and Alvaro Parente won in a 650S at the Nurburgring. The British Touring Car Championship’s successor to the long-standing NGTC regulations, due for introduction in 2027, has been met with cautious optimism by the teams. BTCC boss Alan Gow has kept to his word of evolving the NGTC regulations so that none of the current weaponry will become obsolete, but with a couple of key twists: car models that are not available for sale new in the UK will be allowed as long as their manufacturer has a presence in the domestic market; and engine choice has been freed up so that, whatever car you are running, you can choose from any of the homologated powerplants.
