News flash! Women are aggressive toward one another, particularly toward those women in short skirts. At least that's according to The New York Times, which recently reported on new research out of McMaster University in Canada that found women in a group were outright hostile toward a female "considered attractive from an evolutionary perspective"—"clear skin, low waist-to-hip ratio, and large breasts"—who appeared in a low-cut blouse and short skirt. When the same female showed up in jeans and a loose T-shirt, women in the group paid her little attention. The first thing that makes you want to see Jason Reitman's drably titled Labor Day is that it was made by Jason Reitman. The second is the film's exquisite, unexpected pairing of Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet as troubled, hard-luck lovers Frank and Adele. They look beautiful but lived-in—my favorite kind of love match. Camp, as Susan Sontag once pointed out, depends on an absolute absence of subtlety. And there's nothing in the least bit attenuated or even vaguely plausible about many of the best TV shows these days, the outrageousness of which has catapulted them to the level of serious, if not exactly serious, television.
