There's an oft-quoted line from Oscar Wilde, "Life is far too important a thing ever to talk seriously about." The same could be said of fashion. State the obvious on the subject, and you risk being a bore. Parse the merits of the thing in an original way, and you risk playing the fool. To be sure, the spring/summer 2014 collections had their share of designers with heavy-handed ideas, and there were plenty of others who played it safe. Marsha Norman's first plays led some to crown her the Queen of Tragedy. In works such as Getting Out (about a young ex-con trying to go straight after prison) and the 1983 Pulitzer Prize winner 'night, Mother (about a woman's final preparations for suicide), she perfected a lean, tough style of capturing women in crisis.
