“I was invited,” Eka Papamichail wrote Elle Decor, “to design a concept that unites Georgian fashion brand Dalood’s flagship with a café and bar.” She and her husband Phedon restored an apartment in an Art Nouveau building, featured in our September 2020 issue. Dalood is housed in a two-story early-20th-century apartment building in the historic Vera district. “My vision” she says, “was to honor the spirit of the era while preserving the intimate feeling of home. I wanted guests to feel they’ve stepped into a welcoming house—first discovering clothing, then being invited to dine. EARTH, BY SOU FUJIMOTO When asked about the design for Earth, architect Sou Fujimoto says it was “born from the resonance between our initial inspiration, Not a Hotel’s grand vision, the process of exchanging opinions, and the gentle, rich world that existed there.” Consistent with his modus operandi—breaking down bound aries between structure and landscape—he designed this circular villa in response to the tropical climate and beaches of tiny Ishigaki Island, which lies 1,250 miles southwest of Tokyo. London-based designer Leonora Hamill doesn’t believe in trends. Instead she aims for rooms that “feel as if they have been there forever,” by layering print, color, textiles, and antiques. Half American, half French, born in London but raised in Paris, she’s someone to whom this “potpourri” style comes naturally. The novelist and all-around Grecophile Lawrence Durrell once defined Greek islands as “places where different destinies can meet and intersect in the full isolation of time.” That might sound like a lot of literary hot air, until you visit Patmos. Less than 40 miles from the Turkish coast, Patmos is hardly a traveler’s idea of a daytrip (there’s no airport on the island, and a ferry from the mainland takes seven hours). Fast-forward 20-odd years, and a different kind of performance is unfolding there: a renovation by the Paris-based firm Jouin Manku. Intensity is, funnily enough, exactly what they tried to avoid. At the easternmost end of Long Island Sound sits Fishers Island, a narrow, nine-mile-long Eden revered for its remote coziness, unfettered sea views, and unusual foliage, including eelgrass meadows. Though it’s located about two miles off the coast of Connecticut, Fishers is officially part of New York’s Suffolk County, with a resident community of around 200 people that swells to the thousands in the summer. The deliberately underdeveloped isle draws artists, oyster lovers, and last names such as Whitney, du Pont, and Luce. Designer Lily Dierkes’s introduction to the island came in early 2021. When Trevor Traina set out to design his dream property in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, he didn’t want bunker-style hard lines and glass panes. “There’s this thing called ‘mountain modern,’” he says, “I think that look had its moment.” It’s a style that’s particularly trendy in Jackson, which has become increasingly popular ever since the pandemic, as the Silicon Valley crowd descended for promises of stellar skiing and no income tax. But when Traina began working on his house in 2020, he wanted something a bit more traditional.
