Riese & Müller, global premium cycling brand based in Germany, is briefly pausing shipments of e-bikes and e-cargo bikes to the U.S. due to steep 50% tariffs on steel that came into effect on Aug. 19 and has notified its dealers. A statement from the company reads as follows: “Riese & Müller is temporarily pausing e-bike shipments to the US to evaluate the latest steel tariff regulations and its implications before proceeding with further steps. In a landmark ruling issued on July 30, Ontario Superior Court Justice Paul Schabas sided with cycling and safety advocates, finding that Premier Doug Ford government’s Bill 212, and the plan to tear out dedicated bike lanes from three Toronto routes, violates Canadians’ Charter rights under Section 7. In July, the Trump administration effectively removed the “de minimis” exemption, which allowed packages worth less than US$800 to come into the U.S. duty-free, and the move is being hailed as a win for cycling.“ This represents a significant win for bicycle retailers and manufacturers that pay tariffs on imports only to be undermined by de minimis shipments sent directly to consumers without any tariff,” according to People for Bikes, which has long advocated for ending de minimis shipments because of the significant impact they have on the bike industry. In mid-June, a coalition of bicycle industry training organizations led by Bike Training Collective Canada (BTCC), a Canadian NGO since 2024, submitted a proposal to Employment and Social Development Canada requesting that “bicycle mechanic” be listed as an occupation in the 2026 version of Canada’s National Occupational Classification (NOC) system. “Getting bicycle mechanics listed as an occupation is one of the first steps needed to begin building a professional, skilled workforce for the Canadian bicycle industry,” according to BTCC.
