At the roundabout follow signs for Grimsel and after 2km turn right onto Sheideggstrasse at the sign with a bicycle pointing towards Grindelwald and Grosse Scheidegg. After crossing two railway lines, turn right at the T-junction to Interlaken, then turn right onto Parkstrasse towards Brienz. BMC has achieved a lot in its 22-year existence. Its trademark angular frame shapes and tube forms make its bikes highly recognisable and they’ve been ridden to victory in the Tour de France, road and time-trial World Championships, as well as mountain bike races and Ironman triathlons too. From its hi-tech, robotised Impec lab in Grenchen, Switzerland, BMC has pushed the boundaries of weight, aerodynamics and comfort. We’d pull a lever up or down, and the chain would move up or down the cassette. Then we invented indexed shifting, which removed the need to find the right sprocket on a friction shifter. Then came electronics, and the rule book covering a century of cables and tension was tossed aside. This was FDJ’s bike of choice for the Tour of Flanders and also helped the team to victory at the 2016 Milan-San Remo and the 2015 Alpe d’Huez stage of the Tour. I never doubted its climbing credentials but feared it would be too puny for the cobbled tsunamis awaiting me.
