Meet Mollie Johanson – crafter, illustrator, designer and lover of all things adorable! Mollie designed the smiley cacti on page 54 of this issue, which, like many of her designs for Crazy, draw inspiration from the Japanese aesthetic of cuteness, ‘kawaii’! How did you first get into cross stitch design? I created my very first cross stitch chart when I was around 12 years old. It was of a little row of Easter eggs! I started seriously designing embroidery patterns about 11 years ago, and over time it transitioned into a career. And it was Crazy that convinced me to add cross stitch to my design endeavours again! My first design for Crazy was a set of kawaii birthday charts in issue 201. Top marks! I designed my first cross stitch project when I was just ten. I had to create a cross stitch piece for an assessment at school, so I called my grandma to ask what that was and how I could learn to do it. Two days later, a homemade starter kit that my grandma had assembled arrived in the post. It had everything I needed – simple charts, big needles, low-count aida and lots of thread!
