For television viewers in the 60s, 70s and 80s, Jean Alexander was synonymous with the curlers, pinafores and cheeky gossip of her character, Hilda Ogden, on the long-running soap opera Coronation Street. When she departed her role in 1987, a record-breaking 27 million of us tuned in to say our goodbyes. She wasn’t gone from our tellies for long, though, as Jean soon became a regular on the sitcom Last of the Summer Wine as shop-owner Auntie Wainwright, where she delighted and charmed the country for many more years. Jean spent six decades bringing laughter, joy and moving moments to the small screen, so look back on her life and career with us as you celebrate her in stitches!
