In the Willandra Three Rivers project, a selected group of regional artists from Wiradjuri Country, an area bounded by the Lachlan, Murrumbidgee and Macquarie Rivers, created a vibrant, diverse and thought-provoking exhibition responding to the many layers and landscapes of the Willandra National Park. The project is a partnership between Griffith Regional Art Gallery, Western Riverina Arts, and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, with sponsorship by S&S Creativity Unlimited. This project involved the artists working together through a series of intensive residencies at the National Park during 2015/16, creating works for a collaborative exhibition. I like to paint in a loose, impressionistic style. A style I've always admired. I love paintings that make no sense when viewed up close, but come to life and mean something as you move away. Our imagination is stimulated by these painting as our minds bring the colours, shapes and brush strokes into something that makes sense. Painting is a great way to unwind, and escape from all your worries. There is a sense of creation and achievement. As artists, it should not be our aim to reproduce what we see, but to create a painting. I have to remind myself constantly of this. I have always known that I had creative side, but wasn’t sure which direction to take. I’ve tried many different artistic avenues, from calligraphy, silk painting, painting stage props, and graphic design, but was still unable to satisfy that artistic itch. My primary inspiration and artistic desire has been fuelled and nurtured by my self-taught, artistic mother, who now at 89 years-of-age, is still painting. She inspires me every day. You would be forgiven to think that you had stepped into an Art Gallery when you enter her house, with every inch of wall space adorning her paintings. From childhood, drawing was one of the ways I spent my free time and used to escape boredom at school. In my adolescence, I developed a keen interest in science, especially biology. My Grandpa’s garden was the place where I used to spend quite a significant amount of time playing with plants while carrying out some experimental projects from my biology classes. At that time, my artistic inspirations were not fuelled by nature, since most of my time was spent at school or studying, however, I always used to sketch and draw what I observed around me. The 2017 ISSA International Exhibition is coming to Australia, to the Stump Hill Gallery, McLaren Vale Visitors Centre, South Australia. The exhibition runs from Friday, Feb 10th – Thursday, March 16th with an Artists’ reception on Friday, Feb 10th from 6 - 8pm. See world class scratchboard art at the exhibition. The Gippsland Eleven is a Meeniyan Art Gallery touring exhibition showcasing the talents of eleven Gippsland artists whose works cover a wide range of media and techniques. The Gallery is home to the State Art Collection of Western Australia, which features works from 1800 through to today. I know it’s not feasible for every artist to travel the world in search of good material, but I believe if you want to paint elephants or lions, it’s at least very helpful to see them in their natural environment, better still to spend quite a bit of time with them. Zoos and parks are great places too, but as we hear repeatedly, they should really be used for additional knowledge gathering only, since these animals live quite artificial lives, depending on humans for their food, not following migratory patterns, and other differences. This makes them quite different from their wild relatives. Any locals driving along the beautiful West Coast Highway to Perth’s northern beaches, with the restless Indian Ocean to your left, know it is a memorable experience at just about any time of the year, with endless and seductive white foaming petticoats breaking across the rocky outcrops or settling in a spent force across the silver sand in summer, while in winter beach life is restricted to the wet-suited surfers or seagulls flying along the coast, hanging with the breeze while working on some unknown agenda.
