THE COINS OF THE UNITED STATES have seen some interesting, educational, and just plain fun changes in the past few decades. An entire generation of collectors have come of age collecting quarters with reverses that change several times a year. Our five-cent piece has seen several different designs in the past two decades. Have you ever traded any of your duplicate coins for coins you didn’t have? What value basis did you and your trading partner use? Did you feel it was an even swap, or did you feel you were on the losing end? Winning end? Over my 65+ year history with coins, I’ve made quite a few trades, some wise and some otherwise (not so wise), hence the title. I live in an apartment complex that has a soda and snack vending machine. I recently found a 2021 Washington Crossing the Delaware Quarter in the snack machine. Kari Brower Brick, N.J. I’ve been collecting coins since 1957 when I was 11 years old. I received a bubble gum machine with bubble gum balls for my birthday that year. Gum balls were one penny each. There is a lot of interest in circulating commemorative quarters. This is important since it draws the general public into coin collecting. Coin collecting got a huge bonus on Oct. 6 when the U.S. Mint unveiled its first American Women Quarters Program coins. (See full story and designs on Page 10 of this issue.) Due to the subject matter, this being a diverse group of historically important women appearing on the reverse of each coin, the news hit the national as well as the numismatic news.
