The long, long, long fade-in of the mighty opening track Beyond The Pale, with titular children playing in the background, sets the tone for a joyous, hypnotic second album from The Mission, cementing their place at the smoother, darker end of goth rock. Produced by Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, the whole recording is impressively polished and professional without conceding any gothic principles whatsoever, thus allowing the musicianship of the band to reach its full potential.
Wayne Hussey’s vocal variations on an array of strong songs are admirable – brooding on Heaven On Earth, building dramatically on Kingdom Come and pleasingly coherent on Aerosmith cover Dream On.
The main hit, Tower Of Strength, fits all the gothic criteria while also being a fine pop song, Heat…
