After nine weeks on the road in the van, we are back in the real world of caravan events and reviews. I've been to Brisbane for the Let's Go Queensland Caravanning and Camping Supershow, followed by catching up with some northern builders. It was a rude shock to the system. During our time on the road, we took in many southern coastlines between Robe in South Australia and Albany in the west. We found gobsmacking vistas at nearly every corner. A recent ABC News article has urged caravan owners to carefully consider their loads before heading off on their travels. The Queensland Transport and Main Roads Compliance Manager, Jarrod Wilson, reported that of 17 drivers pulled over in Gympie, 12 had rigs with either uneven or excessive weights. Non-compliance is a road safety issue as well as an insurance concern. Drivers have been warned that overweight rigs may be deemed unroadworthy, meaning that insurance policies can be declared void. Ken Wilson of road safety program Truck Friendly said, “The onus to understand the road rules and ensure compliance with weight limits is on the driver. Rules can vary across different states, so it is important to do your research before travelling.”…

THE KIMBERLEY, WESTERN AUSTRALIA The 647km Gibb River Road in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia is one of the country's iconic road trips. With sections gradually being upgraded, it's no longer the challenge it once was and Grey Nomads now ply this remote road. There is spectacular scenery wherever you look, whether it's one of the many gorges along the Gibb, the impressive Mitchell Falls, Montgomery Reef off the coast, or the Boab trees which dot the landscape. The Kimberley has its mysteries. Where did the Boab tree come from? CARAVAN SHOW RECAP FEATURE Held in Brisbane's Showground, which traverses the northern railway line, there was lots to see and lots of walking to be done along with adroit investigation involved in tracking down all the displays. The main grassy showground was given over to tightly packed camper trailers and a selection of vans. More vans and motorhomes found spots in the various pavilions and under grandstands. Sunny but cold weather didn't deter buyers, and all dealers reported solid sales. New brands told us that they had sold over 50 vans even with build times approaching two years. It's been four months since we left home in the Blue Mountains to travel around Australia in our Toyota Landcruiser and 21ft offroad caravan. However, we didn't expect a global pandemic which meant increased travellers on the road, and we didn't budget for the higher cost of fuel and groceries, thanks to current world affairs. Destination NSW and the Caravan & Camping Industry Association NSW (CCIA NSW) have joined forces to create the ‘Feel More, Live More’ campaign. The multi-week television, social and digital media advertising campaign will help NSW travellers plan and book their upcoming trips. Aimed at caravanners and campers, the campaign began on 12 June and profiles some of the great escapes across the State. CCIA NSW's CEO Lyndel Gray estimated that 3.5 million caravan and camping trips are taken in NSW each year. The majority of these travellers are NSW residents, making the campaign integral to boosting the State's tourism income. HOW MUCH CAPACITY? Batteries are slightly deceptive devices. The Amp-Hour (Ah) rating is mostly used to compare batteries, rather than as an indication of effective capacity. Take a 100Ah battery, which is the standard rating in many caravans as an example. Theoretically, the battery could supply 5A for 20 hours, 10A for 10 hours or any mathematical combination which equals 100, but in reality, it doesn't quite work like that. What happens is that as the battery's level of charge drops, so the does the voltage - and once the battery capacity drops below 30 per cent, some devices like water pumps and fridge compressors may not work well. In addition, many battery manufacturers recommend that for maximum life, a lead-acid AGM battery should not be used regularly below 50…
