So much so, in the last decade we experienced them virtually every single year, with 2021-2022 the worst on record. Veteran Kiwi sailor Matt Mason could not be prouder of his 14-year-old son Will, who in April was crowned the national champion in the Starling class, only five days after winning the Optimist national title. The New Zealand SailGP Team came away second in a nail-biting grand final race on San Francisco Bay. Defending SailGP champions Australia cemented their third season win, finishing just centimetres ahead of New Zealand, while Emirates Great Britain rounded out the season podium in third. Boatbuilders and electronics giants were already talking about assisted docking systems long before the pandemic. But now that Covid has come and gone, assisted docking has gone from a “maybe, someday, one day” concept to a “here it is” proposition. At the Miami International Boat Show in mid-February, Yamaha treated a handful of select journalists – yours truly among them – to an advance peek at its own assisted docking platform called DockPoint. The company demonstrated an early prototype of the system that was installed on a Grady-White Canyon 336 centre console day yacht rigged with twin Yamaha 425 XTO Offshore outboards. Back in the day when Goat Island was the first and only marine reserve in New Zealand (and the world), two scientists from the University of Auckland could be seen bobbing about in a tiny plywood rowboat collecting plankton in a bucket. They then graduated to a tinnie of the unremarkable kind. The marine biologists studying at the university’s Marine Research Lab at Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve (the official name for Goat Island) have since progressed through a fleet of research vessels – all a tad too small and under-equipped. THE 12TH EDITION of the transatlantic Route du Rhum included 138 single-handed sailors who departed Saint Malo in the English Channel for the dash across to Guadeloupe in the northern Caribbean. Included in the six classes were three monohull and three multihull divisions. Leading the way were eight of the giant Ultim 32/23 trimarans which took only a week, followed by the Ocean Fifty Trimarans and the mixed fleet of Rhum Multihulls. This latter category included some classics, including the pioneering Happy which is a copy of the earlier Rhum winning boat and Flo, Florence Arthoud’s former Rhum winner. A tricky rotation for the 2022-23 PSP NZ Jetsprint Championship’s final round at the Novus Glass Aquatrack in Wanaka on April 8 challenged the teams as they battled for top honours. The first 10 boats went the wrong way and many others made errors throughout the day, which made the racing even more exciting for the large crowd. There were around 3,500 spectators, who turned up on a chilly Saturday morning and stayed on as it turned into a beautiful hot day. Steve Newcombe has always had an eye for lovely boats. Back in the day, oh about 1,000 years ago, we had raced Jollyboats against one another, the most beautiful sailing dinghies ever, from the drawing board of Kiwi legend John Spencer. Naturally Steve had the finest of them, his immaculate (and fast) E Hoa. We’ve since been on separate tacks. Steve’s been beguiled by fast coastal racing monohulls. And he’s owned a few exemplars of the type: a Ross 780 and then a Davidson 37 named Sliver with which Steve did the 2002 and 2005 Round North Island Races. TRIMARANS GREW from traditional double-outrigger hulls of the northern Pacific, particularly the Philippines and eastern Indonesia, where these multihulls remain the dominant design for traditional fishing boats. Adding a second outrigger created the wide base ideal for stability and loading cargo for inter-island trading, usually downwind. The western trimaran concept is credited to Ukrainian Victor Tchetchet, who coined the word and built two trimarans made of marine plywood in his adopted country of the USA during the 1950s. These were 24 feet long. This idea was further developed by American Arthur Piver, who produced plywood kit trimarans which were adopted by other homebuilders, but they were heavy and not very sea-kindly by modern standards. The Eke Panuku ‘Best Sustainable Action of the Year’ award recognises boaties and businesses who are leading by example to protect New Zealand coastlines. After having been locked down and cooped up for far too long, the opportunity to get back out in the world and return to walking through real, live, in-person boat shows has been just too good to pass up. While huge petrol engines tend to attract the lion’s share of attention at the Miami International Boat Show, the launch of an all-new Electrification Pavilion this year highlighting the latest and greatest in high voltage propulsion was a first and an indication of just how far electrification has come since the start of the pandemic – and even in the gas guzzling, high horsepower US market.
