The Onehunga Festival 2023 was a huge success with fantastic weather and a big public turnout. One of the festival’s many fun events was the cardboard boat race organized by Aotea Sea Scouts and the Onehunga Business Association. This is the second such boat race to be held on Onehunga Lagoon, the first being in 2021 – the 2022 event was cancelled due to COVID-19. This year’s Cardboard Boat race had 10 final entrants. The three winning designs were: 1st Place – a Baywatch Jet-ski powered by Vinesh; 2nd Place – a Naval battleship Vengence powered by father and son team Mark and Hayden; and 3rd Place – a Viking longboat propelled by Papa Skullcrusher and Millie Hiccup. Te Rehutai, Emirates Team New Zealand’s 36th America’s Cup-winning yacht returned to the waters of Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf just over two years since the last time it was sailed for the final race of AC36. The team’s AC75 emerged from the shed after a long hibernation sporting fresh new livery and technically presenting a valuable bridge between the 36th and 37th America’s Cup AC75 class rules. Ten years ago, marine electrician, amateur boatbuilder and career sailor Simon Minoprio began building his first Innovision boat, in aluminium, inspired by the Wally Boats he’d seen in the Mediterranean while leading his Vision Yachting sailing team on the Match Racing World Circuit. Minoprio is partially blind in his left eye, which the team’s name wryly played on. REEFRUNNER Dear Editor, I am writing to follow up on the story about John Senior from the March edition. A friend of mine brought the article to my attention because of the segment on Reefrunner, and the feature photos. Reefrunner is still very much a live concern. I’ve recently taken charge of her from my dad who bought her about 15-20 years ago from Tony Shields in Kerikeri. I’m not certain if Tony took her over from John Senior, but I think it is likely. Dad is still sailing but has started sailing a Farrier trimaran. Reefrunner is no longer the RNI racer that she once was. But she is still actively sailed as a coastal cruiser. The most exciting racing on water is coming to New Zealand’s biggest city, 23-24 March 2024, with the SailGP global championship unveiling its final Season 4 calendar. So, Wave Runner’s next lift was onto a ship for her Indian Ocean and Red Sea journey. We met her in Marmaris, Turkey, and then spent nine months cruising the wonderful Turkish Coast and many of the Greek Islands. Michael will be based at Kiwi Yachting’s Mt Albert site, with occasional visits to Twin Coast Marine. Michael joins Kiwi Yachting with over 20 years’ experience as a motor mechanic, 12 of those with Ferrari. Michael is no stranger to the marine industry, having grown up helping his father prepare for many local sailing regattas with Ponsonby Cruising Club and Richmond Yacht Club.
