BILL RUPLE WINS THE FINAL LORENZI AWARD  Custom knifemaker Bill Ruple was presented with the BLADE Show 2019 Aldo and Edda Lorenzi Award during the BLADE Magazine Awards Reception June 8 in the Garden Court Area of the Renaissance Waverly Hotel in Atlanta. Sponsored by Edda and Aldo Lorenzi, owners of the old G. Lorenzi retail knife store in Milan, Italy, the award goes to a knifemaker who excels in terms of teaching and mentoring his fellow makers in the art of knifemaking. It includes a cash prize of $1,000 and an award plaque, both donated by the Lorenzis. Few people in any field achieve the status BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame® member Buster Warenski reached at the height of his custom knifemaking career. The reasons are simple. Yes, he was gifted beyond belief. However, in addition, he was inventive. Then, perhaps most of all, he was relentless. For most of the custom knife world, when the name King Tut is uttered, people conjure up images of the breathtaking dagger that Warenski labored for seven years to produce. It is not the boy pharaoh of Egypt whose mummified body lay undisturbed in its tomb for 33 centuries before its discovery in 1922. Based loosely on a Scandinavian leuku, Matt Paul’s fixed blade combines features of both bushcraft and chef ’s knives. The leuku part comes in the 7-inch blade of a feather-pattern damascus of 1095 carbon and 15N20 nickel alloy steels forged by the maker and Greg Cimms. The leuku-style blade features a Scandinavian grind and the belly toward the front for bushcraft chores. The chef ’s knife influence is reflected in the handsomely carved and contoured handle of stabilized box elder burl with black G-10 and sterling silver spacers. Paul sculpted the handle using needle files, incorporating flats on top and bottom. Matching grooves on the butt and bolster taper into the handle’s horizontal mid-line, and a groove extends completely around the spacer. An inch long closed, the spectacular 40-blade miniature cover knife by Japan’s Isao Ohbuchi won the Yvon Vachon Best Miniature Knife Award in the custom knife judging competition of BLADE Show 2019. Along with all the other knives in the competition (page 24) except Gabe Mabry’s winner of the Best Kitchen Knife Award judged by Ethan Becker, a select panel of three custom knife authorities judged Ohbuchi’s award winner. Including Becker, all three judges were chosen by the BLADE® staff. Ohbuchi calls his tiny folder a “sportsman’s knife” and stated it is inspired by the legendary Joseph Rodgers & Sons of Sheffi eld, England, which made fantastic folders and fixed blades in the 19th century. Nicole Warden won an unprecedented fourth straight title in the women’s division and Donavon Phillips won his first-ever men’s division crown in the 17th Annual BLADE Show World Championship Cutting Competition. Conducted by BladeSports International, the competition was moved inside due to inclement weather in the Galleria Specialty Shops area of the Cobb Galleria Centre. It was the first time the event was held indoors. Robin Berry and Jonni Jo Carothers placed second and third behind Warden in the women’s division, respectively, and the respective second- and third-place finishers in the men’s division were Dan Keffeler and Ben Propst.
