This special issue celebrates the outcomes of the 2022 Australian Interior Design Awards, a partnership event of Artichoke and the Design Institute of Australia. This year we received 449 entries, representing an immense variety of scales, budgets and briefs. However, this year’s award winners all share a common goal – a commitment to emotional connection, artisanship and utility, all while being simply sublime. This year’s winning interiors set new benchmarks for the industry and show that Australian interior design is evolving and thriving. The awarded projects across the eleven categories employ design thinking to solve complex briefs and requirements. Dean Norton established his eponymous studio with the desire to have freedom in his design work: to have full creative expression and control, to design functional pieces that are artistic statements and embody stories, and to not be limited by a client brief or budget. British-born and Melbourne-based, Dean studied graphic design at college and then interior design at the University of the Arts London, after which he worked on retail and commercial projects, including custom furniture and fixtures for high-end clients. “I loved designing custom pieces because we didn’t have a limited budget and the brief was to stand out, so I could express myself creatively,” he says. Award for Hospitality Design supported by: Award Hospitality Design Designer Studio Gram Design statement — Arkhé is a bar and dining room that responds to the ritual of cooking over fire through the ephemeral nature of time and decay with an acknowledgment of the beauty in everyday life. Time-worn objects and natural materials are the key to attaining balance. The site came with a 400-millimetre level change from the entry to the rear courtyard, along with an elongated, corridor-like connection from the entry to the rear of the site. This provided an opportunity to create three distinct seating zones: the lounge, the dining room and the courtyard, all offering distinct experiences. Award Emerging Interior Design Practice Practice profile — With boundless creative energy and an entrepreneurial spirit, Brahman Perera found establishing a solo interior design studio part of a natural progression. After studying at RMIT for a bachelor of architectural design and a master of architecture, Perera worked in fashion design and curation before he honed his interior design skills at some of Melbourne’s most reputable studios. Building on this creative foundation, Brahman established his own practice in early 2020, at the age of 33. Brahman has since developed a portfolio of nearly ten projects across residential, workplace and hospitality, each expressing his layered and personalized approach to interiors. The Design Institute of Australia (DIA) has a proud history spanning eight decades. During that time, we have supported and championed Australia’s highly skilled and innovative design community and the value of design. Although the contribution of design to our economy is roughly the size of the construction industry, it is not widely recognized as vital. It is often seen as a superficial layer disconnected from the real work of innovation, a discretionary investment that can be discarded in a downturn. But looking across all industries, the design sector generates more value than any other and design thinking has the potential to add value to any sector. Mitch by Danielle Brustman Danielle Brustman has transformed a tired 1950s suburban shopfront in south-east Melbourne into a vibrant, colourful space for hair salon Mitch. “We started with colour,” says Brustman. “Yellow, to be exact – the signature colour for the brand. We have used varying shades across a range of materials, including glass, timber and tile.” Brustman stripped back the existing fitout to the original concrete floor and installed washing and cutting stations, and a workstation table so that clients can use their laptops while they wait for their hair to dry. Yellow glass partitions are complemented by mustard and white glass mosaic tiles and hand-coloured oak joinery. Award for Sustainability Advancement supported by: Award Sustainability Advancement Designer BKK Architects Design statement — Located within Jewell Station Village in Melbourne, 17 Union Street by Neometro includes 39 apartments and a retail and public realm development. With architecture by BKK Architects and interiors by Clare Cousins Architects, it’s a building that will wear “in, not out” and support wellbeing and connection in the community. Sustainable living at 17 Union Street is about creating infrastructure that supports resilient communities whilst incorporating environmentally sustainable design principles into the built form. 17 Union Street prioritizes materials in their raw form, avoiding applied finishes, toxic coatings and imminent maintenance. Award for Workplace Design supported by: Award Workplace Design Designer BVN Design statement — A redesign of Multiplex’s Sydney headquarters presented an opportunity to create a place that inspires excitement for solving complex problems, learning and making. The workplace is an authentic reflection of the company’s identity, focusing on its people and its “can-do” culture, showcasing the business as a construction industry innovator. Split over two floors, the fitout deliberately starts on the higher level. Upon entry, three rectilinear voids puncture the slab, offering unobstructed views of the social hub below. The first impression is open. The double-height hub is bookended on both levels by functions drawing activity in and around: reception, boardroom, training rooms and a bar all contribute to the openness and energy. Award Residential Decoration Designer Flack Studio Design statement — A tri-level Melbourne home, originally a nineteenth-century hardball court set in a mews square reminiscent of residential London and transformed by architect John Mockridge in 1970 into Australia’s first warehouse conversion, has been transformed back to its bohemian spirit by honouring the original architecture. The client wanted a space that acted as a humble sanctuary to his LA-based double life. Flack Studio responded to this through a complete redesign of the floor plan to focus on function and comfort. The design team wanted a space that felt honest with the client’s age yet would age gracefully with him for the next 50-plus years. Having owned the warehouse for 25 years, the client retired and relocated from New South Wales. This move was the catalyst to undertake the conversion from commercial tenancy to home. Originally a stable and cart store designed by esteemed architect Harry Norris, the house had a rich history of varied tenants, including an ironworks, a salvage warehouse and a dressmaking atelier. Award for Sustainability Advancement supported by: Award Sustainability Advancement Designer FJMT Studio Design statement — FJMT Interiors created a new head office for Built Sydney within the adaptive reuse development Substation No. 164. A heritage warehouse and electrical substation are seamlessly integrated through modern insertions and interconnecting stairs, providing multiple view lines and circulation paths that have provided a collaborative, sustainable and healthy workplace. Two adjacent heritage buildings, Shelley Warehouse and the electrical substation, were integrated though penetrations in adjoining walls. The two heritage-listed buildings, together with the fitout targeting a 6 Star Green Star Interiors and WELL Platinum Rating, added an extra level of complexity and challenge to the project that was embraced by the client and design team from the onset. Award Retail Design Designer Studio Edwards Design statement — Located within a corner brick terrace in central Collingwood, the newly re-located sneaker store Finesse is designed to provide an intimate setting for rare and limited-edition shoes. The existing walls and ceiling are washed in neutral blush tones with a series of steel vertical acrow props (scaffolds) providing support for display shelving and clothing rails. Each shelving unit is fabricated from a single folded aluminium sheet and bolted in place to the scaffold supports. This allows for the display and interior space to be fully adjustable, negating any fixings made to the existing space as well as being easily removable at the end of the tenancy.
