After the rapids of Decension George, the calm, deep waters of Irenabyss offer a discernible break and obvious stop for the night. With campsites on both sides of the river, a trail to the paddlers’ left leads walkers on a steep ascent to the summit of Frenchmans Cap. I later learnt that it was here, 41 years ago on the banks of the Franklin, that the author of Death of a River Guide Richard Flanagan met Bob Brown.
