Apple’s 1999 iMac G3 revolutionised the personal computer with its cutting-edge tech. But let’s be honest: what we all really remember is its cute curved shape and rainbow of happy hues. Now, after years of serious silver, the Cupertino giant has finally brought back some colour for its new ultrathin iMac, available in green, yellow, orange, pink, purple and this lovely deep blue. Each option features a softer shade on the front to allow users to focus on their content, and a bold, saturated colour on the back; colour-matching accessories include a woven power cable. Our other two worthy winners are Germans Ermics’ frosted glass console, an ethereal design part of the Amsterdam-based designer’s ongoing polychromatic, ombré explorations, and Ilse Crawford’s North Sea Blue version of Hans J Wegner’s ‘CH26’…

Paolo Rizzatto’s ‘265’ lamp was first produced by Flos in black and white in 1973. Now a new colour version celebrates the Italian architect’s colour-coded original drawings – blue for the arm, red for the lampshade and yellow for the counterweight. Another bold Italian reissue is Aldo Rossi’s ‘Parigi’ armchair, a 1980s design featuring sweeping black metal armrests and a bright red seat, created by the architect for his ideal office. Last but not least is Charlotte Perriand’s curved desk, created for the architect’s own Parisian studio and relaunched by Cassina with a new compartment for cables.…

We dug deep for this category and found buried treasure in the form of temptingly tactile pieces crafted from organic materials such as wood, marble and ore. From Max Lamb’s sculptural chair composed of interlocking blocks of Western red cedar and Oliver Whyte’s monolithic vessel made from resin-bonded sand to Stefano Giovannoni’s reassuringly robust marble table for Ghidini 1961, edged in burnished metal, and Germans Ermics’ marble stool, whose rippled form aligns with its striations, these are objects that elevate the wild beauty of their natural materials. Meanwhile, Wonmin Park explored the relationship between natural and manmade beauty with a series of tables that juxtaposed volcanic rock bases, the surfaces of which have been smoothed to become mirror-like, emerging effortlessly from precisely cut steel tops. We’ve been transfixed by tech that reveals its inner workings, triggered by the revival of a design from 1938. Franco Albini’s Radio in Cristallo, which sandwiched the innards of a traditional radio between two glass rectangles, was conceived as a riposte to the florid furniture-like radiograms of the 1930s. Now, working with the Fondazione Franco Albini, Cassina has taken its perfect proportions and switched in modern components, including a 7in display, Bluetooth pairing and DAB radio. Then there’s the Cell Alpha, the debut product of California’s Syng, founded by former Apple designer Christopher Stringer and brand marketer Damon Way. Boho is back. Designers have been channelling a sophisticated 1970s vibe with a revival of cane chairs, curvaceous chandeliers and colourful furnishings. Our sleek snug is set up for relaxed lounging with Norm Architects’ upholstered rattan armchair and David/Nicolas’ luxuriously pillowy sofa, while Francesco Librizzi’s orb-like lamp and Ahm & Lund’s mouthblown glass pendant shed soft light over the serene scene. Pops of disco-glam colour come in the form of Jan Kath’s rug, Piero Lissoni’s shiny tables and Draga & Aurel’s resin-coated cabinet, while chilled tunes play out on La Boite Concept’s high-fidelity turntable.…

We’re collecting all the marbles this year, starting with Australian designer Fred Ganim’s modular furniture system, made entirely out of Statuario. Also made of Italian stone are M2 Atelier’s ‘Apple’ floor lamp, with a stem-like leather handle and a base available in three types of marble, and Patricia Urquiola’s ‘Taula’ table, inspired by the prehistoric structures found in the Balearic islands. Next up are two Nordic designs: Danielle Siggerud’s stool, an attempt to square the circle made out of a single piece of stone, and Vipp’s new table lamp, with a marble base incorporating the brand’s signature dimmer button, as well as an elegant reeded glass shade. Also beautifully striated is Studio Mumbai’s blue Hainaut limestone table for Hermès, engraved with radiating lines representing rays of light.…

Tasked with designing the new café for Copenhagen Contemporary – an art centre set within a former welding hall in the Danish capital – local studio Tableau (W*266) and artist Ari Prasetya approached 25 artists, architects and designers to create unique stools, chairs and benches, making use of offcut wood provided by flooring company Dinesen. Participants range from emerging to established talents, and their creations are, at turns, geometrically rigorous and whimsically shaped, with a particular highlight being Paul Cournet’s ‘LC2 Douglas’ chair – an homage to the modernist icon by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand. Connie-Connie’s delightful snapshot of contemporary design will eventually be available for sale and, in the meantime, offers a perfect complement to the menu by Alchemist, chef Rasmus Munk’s two-Michelin-starred restaurant next door.…

For his first foray into bathroom design, for Turkish brand VitrA, Tom Dixon looked to 19th century aesthetics. ‘I like the feeling of permanence in Victorian bathrooms, with their big chunky taps and fat pipes,’ he says. The resulting collection, ‘Liquid’, takes the British designer’s distinctive bold approach to a new functional level, merging soft geometries and shapely, shiny silhouettes to create forms that nod to the work of Jeff Koons, Claes Oldenburg and Barbara Hepworth. Comprising bathroom essentials such as sinks, showerheads, taps, WCs, mirrors and hooks, as well as furniture including stools and cabinets and a series of textured tiles, the collection follows VitrA’s tradition of creative collaborations, while expanding the brand’s reach beyond just bathroom products. High jewellery meets horological expertise in this unique mitten watch, which envelops a Baignoire Allongée timepiece in a sensual gold and diamond mitten. The mitten, crafted from supple rose gold mesh and set with nearly 1,600 diamonds, was created in collaboration with a master glove-maker to ensure it drapes fluidly over the hand, forming a precious second skin. Created using 3D printing, the intricate design proved challenging for both watchmakers and jewellers, who meticulously assembled thousands of microscopic pieces of gold using lasers and small pliers more commonly used for microsurgery. The diamond-paved dial of the Baignoire Allongée watch inside, whose crown is cleverly concealed, ensures that the glove and the watch are joined seamlessly.…

Italian architect Monica Armani took inspiration from 1960s style icon Jackie O to create her ‘Allure O’ table and ‘Flair O’ chairs. ‘I love her glamorous style; it’s always precise, never excessive,’ says Armani. Recalling the elliptical geometric shapes of the designer’s 2017 ‘Madison’ mirror, itself inspired by Jackie O’s signature sunglasses, the pieces sport similarly graceful, sinuous lines, with a perfectly proportioned truncated cone base and rounded edges. To complement them are two equally curvy and elegant tableware collections: ‘Dough’, by London studio Toogood, is named to highlight the kneading process that is essential in both baking and pottery, while the ‘Omar’ series, by Barcelona-based designer Omar Sosa, is handmade in Portugal for Copenhagen’s Raawii and available in either blue or a selection of earthy tones.…

In the past few months, we’ve all realised the importance of a quiet place, where you can rest and recuperate with the door safely shut on the world. This peaceful haven should have a bed, of course, and we’re particularly fond of Marcio Kogan’s ‘Brasilia’ bed, which comes with an enveloping Canaletto walnut headboard and tiny legs supporting a large, wide base that seems to magically float away from reality. Further cushioning is provided by Rubelli and Slalom’s ‘Wave’ acoustic panels, whose undulating elements are easily installed using Velcro. Reusing and recycling has become an essential part of preserving our planet. One man’s trash can become another man’s treasure, and many designers are rising to this challenge, transforming unwanted household clutter into fresh new creations. Our favourite examples include Better Weather’s works, created using discarded melamine particle boards to echo the strokes of a Van Gogh painting, Philippe Malouin’s steel dining chair, fashioned from waste material found in scrapyards, Lucas Faber’s shoe rack, made from sheet steel and recycled rubber, and Tom Robinson’s minimalist flatpack chair, constructed from 100 per cent recycled plastic sheets made from discarded consumer electronics. Launched in 2020 but revised and enhanced for 2021, LG’s futuristic PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier is aimed not just at passing pandemics but also congested and smoggy urban locations. Combining face mask with filter and voice amplification system, it is lightweight and easy to wear, and is available in two colours and two sizes. It incorporates some ultra-compact, highly efficient technology, including two Hepa filters, powered by a tiny, near-silent electric motor to deliver a flow of unbroken clean air to the wearer. A design that ‘invites play and exploration’, this lamp is based on Anne Boysen’s fascination with light and space. In particular, the Danish architect and designer was inspired by the moon: ‘I was at my desk one night when I suddenly saw it. A ray of moonlight shone through a gap in the curtains. I put different surfaces in front of it and became fascinated with how something white produced a diffused reflection of light,’ she explains. ‘So I asked myself, how do you simplify this, to make the complex simple and intuitive?’ Her design recreates the moonlight effect through LED and mirrored surfaces. With their colourful curves and uncanny details, these five unique designs seem to have been beamed down from another galaxy. Belgium-based Lithuanian designer Barbora Žilinskaite has fashioned a green shelving unit with doors in the shape of clasping hands, while Laia Arqueros’ take on traditional Galician chestnut roaster pots includes a Dalíesque pair of eyes. French designer Diego Faivre and American artist Chris Wolston’s curvy designs in blue and lilac boast contrasting finishes, one smooth (made of a special air-drying clay) and one textured (in handcrafted Colombian wicker). Fashion designer Hussein Chalayan brings a sculptural simplicity to tableware with a new dinner set for Turkish homeware brand Karaca. The collection, crafted from ground pearl, encompasses plates and cups that nest together in sensual formations, bringing a playfulness to the ritual of a meal. ‘I wanted to do a dinner set that would engage the user and encourage them to use the plates in a more diverse way,’ says Chalayan. The pieces, which have been in the works for almost four years, put functionality at the forefront, with considered design details ensuring ease of use. As international travel continues to be such a challenging affair, we welcome any initiative that fills the wanderlust gap. So we were thrilled to hear of a collaboration between boutique New York ice cream maker Morgenstern’s and the Singapore Tourism Board, which has made a taste of the island nation possible on the other side of the world. In October 2021, Morgenstern’s revealed four unique flavours as part of its Flavors of Singapore collection. These included a coconut ice cream with pandan jelly and gula melaka marshmallow, a creamy sweetcorn ice cream with salted egg yolk granola and caramel (pictured), a spicy ginger tea ice cream with candied ginger, and a gin and calamansi citrus sorbet popsicle with condensed milk marshmallow. Lightweight, durable and recyclable, aluminium is a designer’s dream material, with Naoto Fukasawa using it to craft a series of stools that can be used just about anywhere, and Studio Joachim-Morineau taking inspiration from Roman columns and putting aluminium on a pedestal. Nick Ross turned to the post-and-lintel system used in ancient Greek, Indian and Egyptian architecture for his candleholders, while Waiting for Ideas was motivated by the motor industry to create a unique chair with harmonious curves and sharp angles. Designers also love sleek, versatile, corrosion-resistant stainless steel, with Achille Castiglioni moulding it into a playfully bulbous kettle and Shepherd Studio exploring density with its chair composed of 210 stainless steel spheres. Chaumet translates architectural codes into high jewellery in the ‘Torsade de Chaumet’ collection, which imbues the traditionally inflexible nature of precious metal with an easy fluidity. Its centrepiece is a technically accomplished necklace featuring undulating twists – torsades in French – inspired by the frieze which winds its way around the Vendôme Column in Paris’ Place Vendôme, in a nod to the home of the first Chaumet boutique in 1812. The intricate négligé necklace is a contemporary play on its predecessor, initially created a century ago for the Maharaja of Indore. Rather than the pear-cut diamonds of the original piece, it comes with elegant diamond springs that form a neat end to the diamond rope. Tom Sachs is art’s astro-conceptualist, a Nasa obsessive who has devised and equipped his own bricolage space programme. His New York studio is both rocket workshop and mission control, stitching together spacesuits and knocking up landing modules, perfectly imperfect replicas in steel, plywood and foam that celebrate the design and engineering ‘right stuff’ that has taken man to the moon, if not far beyond. (Because he can, Sachs has gone further. In 2012, he put astronauts on Mars and in 2016, he explored Europa, an ice-gripped moon of Jupiter). His latest exploration of the rocketeer mythos, Rocket Factory, launched him into the art world’s next digital dimension, NFTs (non-fungible tokens). Giorgio Armani has long been fascinated by the cultures of East Asia, paying homage in many of his past catwalk collections. In a nod to his fondness for Far Eastern style, Armani Casa launched a new bar cabinet layered with a Japanese tatami-style paper and featuring back-lit panels of gold-toned methacrylate that recall marble veins and mother-of-pearl. Echoing the smooth curves and graphic lines of the art deco period, the cabinet sports elongated cylindrical sides (that also form the legs), sliding doors and a large working area for cocktail preparation. We love using it to create a few tipples, which we serve in some of Armani Casa’s elegantly decorative glassware.
