Golden-coated hazel dormice used to be common in the UK’s woodlands. Unfortunately, since the year 2000, their numbers have declined by 51% and they are extinct in 17 English counties. However, last week wildlife charities, led by the People’s Trust for Endangered Species, introduced 38 captive-bred hazel dormice into woodland in Derbyshire, England. Volunteers will monitor and feed the dormice, who have to stay in nest boxes in cages. If all is well after 10 days, they will be free to wander.…
