Open access operator Grand Union Trains is launching an industry consultation over proposals to run five services a day between Cardiff and Edinburgh.
“We know CrossCountry doesn’t have seating capacity, particularly through the core, and all the signs were there that there wouldn’t be an opportunity for it to strengthen trains or run more trains through the extended contract, so we thought it is time for someone else to step in and try and put a bit of competition into what is a very expensive route to travel on,” Grand Union Managing Director Ian Yeowart told RAIL.
The proposed services would call at Cardiff, Newport, Severn Tunnel Junction, Gloucester, Birmingham New Street, Derby, Sheffield, Doncaster, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh. The target start date is December 2025, initially using Class 22Xs.…
