Third-generation winemaker Gianlorenzo Picollo (picolloernesto.it), 47, never left the land. His family’s 16ha straddle three communes: Rovereto (with vineyards up to 80 years old), Tassarolo and Francavilla. ‘My father Ernesto and I began bottling our wine in 1994. Since then, the quality of Gavi has improved significantly. We see this as largely driven by wealthy collectors and consumers within a broader trend of global growth in luxury consumption. A forceof the Adriatic, Croatia’s wines have been steadily drawing more and more attention to the already-popular tourist destination. And perhaps that’s in part because if you want to discover the country’s outstanding wines, then you seemingly have to pay a visit. Wine exports are indeed limited, as attested by the selection of wines that follows – but the unwavering drive for quality across Croatia’s wine regions in recent years isn’t. Its best results to date were achieved at the most recent Decanter World Wine Awards, where Croatian wines were awarded three Platinum and 16 Gold medals. There’s white wine in the recipe, so it makes a lot of sense to drink the wine you’re going to cook with, unless you happen to have a bottle of dry white wine open. And although you could drink a red wine with the dish, it’s so saline that it will make most reds taste jarringly jammy. (You might get away with a Sicilian red such as a Frappato or Nerello Mascalese, but to be honest I’d prefer a Carricante if you’re thinking of that part of the world.) Arguably, en rama fits perfectly with our contemporary desires for artisanship and low intervention; these wines are a reminder of how fino and manzanilla used to be. En rama means ‘from the branch’, as in ‘the fruit picked from the tree’. Lovers of Sherry clamour to buy en rama bottlings when they’re released each May, having been bottled the previous month when flor – the layer of yeast that protects the wine from oxygen during barrel maturation and gives the wine its character – is at its most abundant. En ramas are often bottled unfined and unfiltered (and in tiny quantities), so can be cloudy in appearance. O urstory begins in the southeastern strip of Piedmont that borders the province of Genoa in Liguria: this is Gavi wine country. The old Salt Route passed through here, following the Via Postumia Roman road on its way up to Pavia and ultimately the country’s far northeast; and in the 12th century, the small town of Gavi became a crucial defensive outpost for the Genoese, as evidenced by its imposing fortress. Here, a unique encounter takes place: the wind from the Ligurian sea, about 30km to the south, blows up to the snow-capped Apennines, caressing villages, castles and hills, woods and vineyards on its way and blessing the air with a special light. What a difference a year makes! My sense of déjà vu quickly disappeared as I tasted through the 2018s. These wines are nothing like the brawny 2017s; Brunellino (‘little Brunello’) was the expression being bandied around by the Italians. Conditions in 2018 are described as fresh. Following the prolonged drought of 2017, winter rains and snowfall replenished depleted reserves. Spring was cool and wet, encouraging vigorous vegetation. Hailstorms hit the southwest mid-July, with Col d’Orcia and Argiano losing 20% and 25% of production respectively. Recurring showers marked the summer. August was significantly cooler, especially towards the end of the month. September saw notable diurnal temperature differences, favourable for ripening Sangiovese. Untilat least the 1990s Piedmont was, perhaps surprisingly, best known for its sparkling wines. Nowadays, of course, thanks to the meteoric rise of Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera et al, the region is widely viewed as red wine country. This, however, ignores a strong history of producing bubbles that dates back to long before the middle of the 19th century, when Carlo Gancia began using the Champagne method (‘metodo classico’) to ferment Moscato grapes from vineyards near Asti. This practice in turn built on the local tradition going back to the 16th century of making ‘filtrato dolce’, a low-alcohol, bubbly and sweet white wine filtered through hessian sacks to block fermentation, which subsequently morphed into today’s Asti/Moscato d’Asti DOCGs. CRISTAL 2015 A mid- to late-April release of Louis Roederer’s Cristal 2015 was anticipated by UK-based distributor Maisons Marques et Domaines.
