Li Xiaodongโs branch-clad Liyuan Library has won the Moriyama RAIC International Prize and its $100,000 purse. The projectโs modest scale and budget set the tone for the newly minted award, which recognizes exceptional, socially conscious design. Constructed in the hillside village of Jiaojiehe, China, the library was funded by Hong Kongโs Lu Qianshou Trust, a rural development grant to improve economies and attract tourism. Xiaodong accepted the prize at an October gala held at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto.
The results of the Cooper Hewitt National Design Awards were announced in October. The 2014 Peopleโs Design Award went to Chinaโs Zhao Zhao for her wearable Spire device that tracks and analyzes physical and emotional health. Winners in nine other categories were also recognized, including Losโฆ
