But as the years have passed, the reality of the time and expense required to develop them has caused a reality check for some. WE love Skodas and they always do well in our Driver Power surveys, because they’re so easy to live with and such good value. The Kodiaq is a case in point, because while it’s a relatively costly car, it’s also Skoda’s biggest model, so you get a lot for your money. UK car-manufacturing numbers fell through the floor in the last month or so. In June, the 27-per cent plunge (vs June ’23) was debilitating and, frankly, unsustainable for the British automotive business. But the disappointing numbers are explained away by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. All this was “expected” and “caused by multiple model changes” as “factories repurpose,” it stated. Also, don’t forget: “Manufacturers are retooling production lines to make electrified models.” Fair enough. SAME CLASS Fiat 500e ONLY Fiat can claim to have matched MINI’s success when it comes to drawing on its heritage. Running costs and value for money are where satisfaction is highest, but its ride and handling also impress, scoring third place in the ride comfort sub-category and 17th for handling. Scores elsewhere are mostly good rather than exceptional, but the C3 doesn’t fall down greatly in any categories, either.
