THE Civic Type R wins points for being the most powerful car of this trio, with 316bhp, as well as the lightest, at 1,380kg. Purists will be pleased, meanwhile, that it eschews the dual-clutch automatic gearboxes found in the Mercedes and VW in favour of a manual transmission.
But while being a manual adds engagement, this, together with the Civic’s front-wheel-drive set-up, means it’s the slowest from 0-60mph, taking 5.9 seconds. But in-gear acceleration is astonishing once off the line, and the Type R is the most exciting car here to drive, with communicative steering, a brilliantly slick gearchange, and a perfect driving position.
