MORE than half of all car drivers break 30mph speed limits, official figures have revealed. Department for Transport (DfT) statistics for 2019 show that 54 per cent of drivers exceeded 30mph speed limits when traffic was free-flowing, with one in five travelling at more than 35mph, and six per cent doing in excess of 40mph. Those figures are in sharp contrast to 60mph zones, where 91 per cent of car drivers stick to limits. The statistics also reveal that 50 per cent of drivers on motorways exceed 70mph, with 12 per cent travelling at more than 80mph. Only one per cent of lorries broke motorway limits – a fact no doubt due to the fitment of speed limiters – but a worrying 44 per cent of HGVs were observed to speed…
