Surfing is no longer the exclusive pursuit of tanned Californians and Bondi natives. Thanks to vastly improved wetsuit technology, and overcrowding in many traditional sunshine-blessed surf locales, die-hard wave catchers have turned to colder climes to get their fix of ocean foam. Driven by a sense of adventure, and a rejection of increasingly crowded beach resorts, many surfers today favour the clean air and icy waters of Stavanger in Norway, Reykjavik in Iceland, and Canada’s Vancouver Island. Manolo Blahnik looked to a diverse range of influences when designing his first menswear collection, from Regency dandy Beau Brummell to Sicily’s boldly hued houses. But it was coverage of a more furnishing-focused kind that inspired the footwear aficionado’s ‘Drusillo’ shoe. The colourful Oxford style nods to the tones and patterns of a Moroccan patchwork quilt. ‘Its detail was exquisite,’ Blahnik demurs. ‘Each piece of fabric had been sewn together so precisely.’ The designer has been creating men’s shoes since he launched his eponymous footwear brand in 1973, catering to the likes of David Hockney and Mick Jagger. MC Escher’s reputation continues to rise, and the Dutch artist’s hypnotic patterns are currently inspiring architects and gamers. ‘A lot of people at the forefront of digital media are finding inspiration in his work,’ says Singapore architect Richard Hassell, of WOHA, who, besides making complex tessellation patterns on bamboo washi and aluminium panels, also embeds aperiodic geometries into the facades of projects. He has recently produced a book showcasing his explorations of mathematical patterns, but he is not alone in his enthusiasm. Escher also surfaced at this year’s Salone. There’s something afoot in the small town of Genk in eastern Belgium. On the site of a former coal mine, a long, dark brick building with a cage at its centre and a large greenhouse at its western end has appeared. It is elegant and unexpected, an enigmatic, provocative presence, calmly nestled among the lush greenery and sighing trees. Inside, one of Belgium’s most renowned artists, Koen Vanmechelen, has set up shop with a project that is part studio, part exhibition space and part research, biodiversity and breeding project. Labiomista, as it has been named, takes the conceptual artist’s work on chickens, cross-breeding and the creation of more diverse, resilient and fertile communities (such as his Cosmopolitan Chicken Project, or ‘CCP’, which began in 2000) to an exciting new level.…

Horological heroes of the hour The unique nature of Swiss watch design – strongly defined by technical and decorative handcraft – has always allowed maverick ideas to flourish and endure, even against the backdrop of growing mass production in the horological industry during the 1950s and 1960s. The Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse, launched in 1968, embodies a collision of eras. The original dial of blue-gold, a specially created alloy, looked back to goldsmith techniques of the 1950s; the slim case, hands and indices emit 1960s suave; yet the piece’s substantial, lozenge-like form hints at early 1970s futurism. Three decades of iterations have rendered the design a true classic; Patek even launched accessories, including Golden Ellipse lighters, pendants and cufflinks. ‘I had no shoe design background at all,’ says Capucine Safyurtlu, the chic former fashion stylist who became the first creative director of Chinese footwear label Stella Luna in February 2016. Its founder and CEO, Stephen Chi, saw Safyurtlu’s Parisian aesthetic and Vogue-honed editing prowess as essential arsenal for European expansion. ‘What was really missing at Stella Luna was a strong DNA,’ explains Safyurtlu of the 12-year-old label, which is owned by Stella International Holdings, a Hong Kong footwear manufacturer that has been working for luxury brands such as Prada, Givenchy and Paul Smith since its creation in 1982. Istanbul-based Numarine is a leader in the burgeoning Turkish marine industry. The company, helmed by Ömer Malaz, builds flybridge and hardtop cruisers, and has ventured into the ‘expedition’ yacht market. With a range of off-the-shelf hull designs, all augmented by the involvement of interior and exterior specialists, Numarine can build bespoke boats in a fraction of the time it takes to make a superyacht from scratch. Trends in yacht design take years to reach the high seas, such is the protracted process of creating complex vessels. Expedition yachts, designed for long voyages, are now almost mainstream, with pioneers like Dutch firm Damen leading the way. Thai break WALDORF ASTORIA, BANGKOK It’s been a long time coming, but the Waldorf Astoria group has finally landed in South East Asia. Its location, in Bangkok’s Ratchaprasong, pays off visually with spectacular views over the Royal Bangkok Sports Club and the city’s skyscrapers. The 171-room hotel occupies 14 floors of a 60-storey tower that its architects, global firm Gensler and local studio DI Designs, conceived as a spiralling magnolia flower in bloom, while most of the interiors are the work of André Fu. The architectural landmarks of the early 20th century, even the newly constructed, futuristic skyscrapers of New York, featured the complex patterns and curvilinear lines of the modish Art Nouveau movement. Reducing energy consumption is now a design priority for architects. Leave it to WOHA – the Singapore-based practice that has built its name on conceiving climate-appropriate towers – to come up with an elegant solution inspired by ancient design features for an oft-overlooked modern problem: the huge amount of energy that goes into ventilating an underground carpark. For its New Cuffe Parade project, an ambitious ten-tower development in central Mumbai, WOHA worked with environmental engineers RWDI to create clusters of slender funnels inspired by the classic wind-towers of Hyderabad, Jaipur’s astrological monument Jantar Mantar, the follies of Paris’ Parc de la Vilette and the stacked designs of architect John Hejduk. We like to keep things fragrant on the home front but scent-making apparatus is not always hot on aesthetics. We’re pleased to see that the problem is currently receiving some much-needed attention from the design world. First up is Australian brand Aesop, whose first foray into homeware, a sculptural brass oil burner (03), has set our skin tingling. In 2007, the American documentary maker Gary Hustwit released Helvetica, a film about a font. Rather remarkably, it went on to play in more than 300 cities in 40 countries and was shown on BBC, PBS and Netflix. He followed it two years later with Objectified, a film about design, which featured a rare onscreen interview with the German industrial designer Dieter Rams, as well as younger designers Erwan and Ronan Bouroullec, Marc Newson and Hella Jongerius. Taking in the view of the glittering Mediterranean from the 27th floor of his new skyscraper in Marseille, the French architect Jean Nouvel says this city is ‘blessed by God’. For decades, Marseille seemed to be cursed – with crime, poverty, corruption, unemployment – but over the past 20 years a series of factors has helped to turn things around in France’s second-largest metropolis. These include a politically savvy mayor, a high-speed train line to Paris, and the city’s selection as European Capital of Culture in 2013. Not least, Marseille is the site of Euroméditerranée, the biggest urban renovation project in southern Europe. In April 2017, the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris held a party to open its summer-long programme dedicated to African art. Meeting in Frank Gehry’s nautically themed exhibition space, South African artists Kemang Wa Lehulere and William Kentridge greeted each other warmly. Actually, it was a bit more nuanced than this: by any reckoning Kentridge is his country’s best-known artistic export, but it was he who made eye contact, strode across the unpeopled dance floor, and singled out Wa Lehulere among a group of artists. It was a small moment, but it felt like a baton was being passed. The culmination of a lengthy design journey, the ClubSwan 50, right, was built by Finnish shipyard Nautor’s Swan for the acclaimed Swiss tenor August Schram. The race-ready sailboat was a collaboration between shipyard, owner and BMW’s design division, thanks to Schram’s enthusiasm for BMW cars. Nautor’s Swan and BMW also have a partnership, through the burgeoning BMW Yachtsport sub-brand and a recent bespoke M760Li model. For his new yacht, Schram wanted the hull to match the precise colour created for the BMW Concept 8 Series, Barcelona Grey Liquid. The car maker tends to jealously guard its conceptual palette, but ultimately Schram prevailed, and the yacht’s hull was finished in this unique hue, with embedded iridescent pigments that shimmer, shift and dance like the surrounding water. Minimalism meets a majesty at Palazzo Daniele, a six-bedroom guest house in Puglia. Set in the village of Gagliano del Capo, where the Adriatic’s rocky coastline meets the sandy beaches of the Ionian Sea, the property is the former family palazzo of Francesco Petrucci, co-founder of Capo d’Arte, a not-for-profit organisation promoting contemporary art in Puglia. Wallpaper’s hot pick of the latest global goings-on In pursuit of inspiration, designers are going down the tubes, using the simple industrial shape to challenge traditional furniture aesthetics. Take, for example, the ‘Disused’ collection, by young Russian designer Maxim Scherbakov, of studio Supaform, which includes a geometrically sculptural commode carved from marble and powder-coated steel. Italian designer Guglielmo Poletti revolutionised the tube’s utilitarian form, using three cuts, one simple rotation and four welding points to create a steel bench, while Milan-based studio Cara/Davide took inspiration from sub-Saharan African artefacts for its curvaceous collection of tubular belles.…

When Amsterdam commissioned the 19th-century Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers to seal off its medieval harbour with the grand Central Station, the city officially turned its back to the water. It took more than a century for the city to turn back around. Today, the vast swaths of abandoned shipyards and brackish terrain along the IJ waterfront have become the city’s most frantic building sites. The Houthaven (lumber port) is the first of many new waterfront districts currently taking shape. Billowing above New York’s Randall’s Island Park, Black Dada Flag (Black Lives Matter) may be Adam Pendleton’s best known artwork. It features his easily recognisable visual style – all black and white, with declarative text superimposed on found imagery, and photocopier marks that bear witness to the creative process. Its message is typical Pendleton, imbued with the history of America’s racial struggle and given newfound urgency by recent social upheavals. ‘For over 2,000 years, we have been living with a shadow sun for our guiding star,’ writes philosopher Michael Marder, a frequent collaborator of Tomas Saraceno, referring to our reliance on Western metaphysics, a branch of philosophy that concerns itself with natural laws that lie beyond human experience. The light of reason, as it is known, has enabled human progress, but also driven us to privilege abstract concepts – notably, monetary value under capitalism – over visible, tangible things. So how can we correct our course and come back to the physical world?
