CARL KLEINER Photographer Carl Kleiner is a Stockholm-based photographer who often works in close collaboration with his stylist wife Evelina. His projects include still-lifes, portraits and lifestyle stories, and he also directs videos. Playful and imaginative, Kleiner’s visual language is anchored in the truly innovative sets he creates for the likes of Ikea, Google, H&M and Herman Miller. We vowed never, ever to do anything in fashion again,’ says Kersten Geers, one half of Belgian architects KGDVS. Swiss architect Lorenzo Giuliani’s work is strongly connected to his home country. He studied at ETH Zurich, then set up practice with fellow student Christian Hönger in 1991, forging a successful career out of winning and building competition designs for large public contracts, predominantly between Bern and Chur. Harbouring desire Secure a berth in Herzog & de Meuron’s shiplike Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg The warehouse revamp set to provide a new home for the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, designed by Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron and ongoing since 2003, is the most anticipated scheme in the city’s HafenCity waterfront district; and now there are clear signs that completion is nearing. Apart from its world-class concert hall, with seating capacity for some 2,100 guests, the project will also include a hotel – reached through an elevated internal plaza and an 82m-long curved escalator – as well as retail and residential spaces. Watching Ridley Scott’s The Martian, it’s impossible not to be gripped by the frantic struggle of one man stranded in space, hundreds of thousands of miles from home. It’s also pretty hard to understand why the future of space travel is so ugly and ineffective. Dude, you’re in space. How hard is it to look good? Andreas Gursky, whose photographic landscapes famously take in the Rhine, rave culture and North Korea’s Arirang mass games, is as meticulous in the digital transformation of his art as he is in the creation of his mayo. He cooks his sole simply: in butter in a cast-iron pan. His vegetables are just steamed broccoli and boiled potatoes. But the devotion goes into the mayonnaise. An egg yolk, sea salt, mustard and good quality olive oil are mixed by hand, then he swaps to a lighter oil so the mayo isn’t too ‘olivey’. Who else but Jaime Hayon could reimagine the watch as a ‘monkey for the wrist’? Like everything else he turns his eye to, the Spanish designer’s quirky approach to horology is joyfully original. ‘I’ve got to put a monkey on my wrist,’ he says, ‘it makes me happy!’ Hayon co-founded Orolog, a watch brand, with Angela Adams and Ian Lowe in 2013. Their first collection was Chroma. The latest, Miko (Japanese for monkey), reimagines the classic chronograph dial as a triangle of discs that becomes a cheeky primate. The youngish British artist Conrad Shawcross drives a Ford Capri. The closest a British-made car came to American muscle, he loves the ‘physical and visceral’ fun of driving it, the sheer effort it takes to haul its ridiculous nose around corners. It’s his second. He fitted a chair, fishing rods and a kite to the roof of his first and called it the Investigation Bureau into the Location of the Soul. Sadly, someone with a hard-tolocate soul nicked it. While he was a student, Shawcross drove a Leyland Sherpa van, a Midlands-made rival to the Ford Transit. ‘Welcome to Copenhagen! Did you have a good flight?’ It’s not often that an architect drives to the airport to pick up a visiting journalist in person, but then David Thulstrup is one of those architects who understands the importance of hospitality and a warm welcome. The reason for this visit is the recent completion of his equally welcoming private residence and studio for the photographer Peter Krasilnikoff, located in a former factory garage in the Islands Brygge harbour district of the Danish capital. Thulstrup founded his studio in 2009. On an unusually cold day in February, Paul Schimmel is providing a tour of the Los Angeles outpost of the gallery where, for the last two years, he has been partner and VP: Hauser Wirth & Schimmel. Reinventing yourself after a high-profile career as a sporting superstar isn’t easy. A world of oenophile wonders and spirit-raising accoutrements The Vinschgau Valley in the South Tyrol is known as the Highlands of Italy for its climate and landscape. One local family operation is now taking advantage of this geography to make history, creating the first all-Italian single malt whisky. ‘Whisky first entered our lives when my father completed sommelier courses in the early 1990s,’ explains Jonas Ebensperger, who heads up the family business. ‘These courses encompassed a range of different spirits, but whisky turned out to be the most sophisticated, offering an excitingly broad spectrum of aromas.’ His father’s passion led the family to study the history and practice of whisky production, and to visit Scotland for tastings. ‘This continued for years,’ explains Ebensperger, ‘and for a long time there was…

Tower power SIR ADAM, AMSTERDAM Eschewing the almost obligatory model of the refurbished period canal house, Amsterdam’s 110-room Sir Adam hotel has launched in the Toren Overhoeks, a tower designed by Arthus Staal for Royal Dutch Shell in 1971. With views of the IJ river and the Eye Film Institute, the hotel has fixed its cross hairs on yuppie millennials, not least those in the music and entertainment business; the building, now known as the A’dam tower, is the HQ of some of the industry’s biggest names. A musical theme is played out throughout the hotel and extends to a music library, also accessible by Bluetooth, on the mezzanine level.
