We had been dreaming about Bolivia’s Lagunas Route (also known as the Southwest Circuit) for years. But now it was no longer some distant, wishful destination. It was time to start our truck’s little engine and complete what would most likely be our longest off-road experience in South America. The Lagunas Route is an unpaved track from Uyuni, Bolivia, to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. The route winds through soft sand and over bumpy sections of washboard and rocky outcrops located in the Bolivian Altiplano, or high plain. Thus far we had only seen photographs of the route depicting otherworldly and desolate (but beautiful) scenery. Glacial salt lakes shimmered in strange, vivid colors of rusty reds and alien greens. Rebelles are tough. They’re strong, dedicated, and can withstand many challenges. Rebelle women are also supportive, have empathy, and can stare defeat or adversity straight in the face while trying to conquer it. These women come in many ages, ethnicities, religions, and backgrounds. But they have a common goal: to finish the rugged and strenuous off-road race known as the Rebelle Rally. This year, 38 teams of women fought their way across the California and Nevada deserts, including the mighty Glamis sand dunes, to end the rally at the Mexican border. The slight incline is nothing to write home about; although with a continuous light drizzle, the clay surface has all the traction of an ice skating rink. The broken front driveshaft is still in a storage locker in the back of the Jeep, so I have no chance with only the rear wheels spinning. I soon find it impossible to move either forward or backward, and in short order, I slide sideways into the ditch on the side of the road. The ditch is not huge, however; even with four-wheel drive, I doubt the Jeep could haul its 6,000-pound bulk up and out under its own power.
